Book Description

June 2005
On the planet called Hyperion, beyond the law and the reach of 28th-century science, waits the creature called the Shrike. Some worship it, some fear it, and some have vowed to destroy it. On the eve of Armageddon, with the entire galaxy at war, seven pilgrims set forth on a final voyage to the Valley of the Time Tombs, where the Shrike waits for them. They seek the answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives and have resolved to die before discovering anything less than the secrets of the universe itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book will change your mind about sci-fi., December 9, 2009
Ediciones B has published many important authors in Spanish translation as Cordwainer Smith's complete works, Orson Scott Card's "Ender Saga" and Connie Willis' opus amongst other.

Now here they present this excellent translation of "Hyperion". This is the first book of a quartet divided in two halves that share the same universe.
Even if "Hyperion" has all the in and outs of a classical Sci-Fi novel, is much more than that.
Is the story of seven pilgrims trying to arrive to a particular shrine in a journey full of dangers, but at the same time is the life story of each one of them.

These personal recounts dig deep into essential human questions.
Religious faith and on what basis is sustained, is investigate from different stand points. One from a Catholic priest view point, in the verge of losing his faith (with references to Theilard de Chardin's cosmos vision), the other one from a Jew intellectual confronted with God commandment to sacrifice his daughter (I found in this episode some resonance of Kierkegaard's meditations in "Fear & Trembling").

Just these two stories will be reason enough to recommend the book, but there is a lot more, much more to enjoy.
A decadent poet tells his life and struggle to find his muse at whatever cost.
A detective's story mixed with John Keats restored to life.
All this elements skillfully mixed in a page-turner Sci-Fi adventure.

It is one of the best novels I ever read.

Gracias
Luis
