Editorial Reviews

Hypermodern Jazz 2000.5 returns home from its former label Mille Plateaux! This is a fine example of part of a collection of Alec Empire’s electronic work from the late ‘90s. Like his peers Aphex Twin, Empire has constantly provoked his machinery into performing unexpected but affecting acrobatics for the ears.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is Digital Hardcore, July 21, 2001

For those who truly know DHR music, this album shouldn't surprise you. It has always been Alec Empire's place to take forms of music that we earlier perceived as natural (Jazz in this case) and completely destroy it beyond recognition. Saturated in trippy beats and melodies, Hypermodern Jazz 2000.5 delivers a mind-anesthetizing experience that easily competes with Alec's Destroyer (albeit in a much different way). Take for example the first track off the album entitled "Walk The Apocalypse." It is absolute fact that this song is a modern day classic with its ambitious showcase of disorienting omnipotent rhythms and ingenious keyboard mastery. The mood of the album rarely deviates after that although it does delve into some choice voice samplings that only Alec would have thought up to use. Oh well, in conclusion I don't really need to recommend this to DHR fans since you wisely picked it up long ago. All others should be ashamed.

4.0 out of 5 stars My Funk is Useless, January 5, 2001

Hypermodern Jazz 2000.5 is a blend of trippy drum beats, crazy basslines, and even stranger voice samples that all seem to come together perfectly for an excellent album. The track "God Told Me How to Kiss" is probably the best on the album, but all of them are pretty good. I highly recommend it to any DHR fans!
