A Classic Text,
By Roger Akroyd (ABQ, NM) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hypersonic Inviscid Flow (Dover Books on Physics) (Paperback)
This is a well-regarded, classic, treatment of the principles of hypersonic inviscid, external flow (primarily steady flow). While the book predates current CFD and experiments, it contains fundamental analysis and discussion useful to a scientist/engineer seeking an understanding of hypersonic flows around bodies in order to carry out such calculations and experiments. The clarity of presentation is superb and well-known for it. The authors are distinguished in the community for their large body of research work and have written/edited other texts such as the english translation of The Physics of Shock Waves and High-Temperature Hydrodynamic Phenomena by Zeldovich and Raizer- which is also a Dover book and of exceptional clarity and value and can be considered to be the unsteady-flow complement to the present book.A reading of Hypersonic Inviscid Flow could be combined with readings of more recent texts or papers that include treatments of experiments/calculations with multi-reaction, chemical- kinetics coupling to the fluid flow, viscous flow consideration and current illustrative examples (for example the books written/edited by J. J. Bertin, amongst others )to get a comprehensive appreciation of the state-of the art in hypersonic flows. The level of discussion is suitable for an advanced undergraduate or graduate in engineering/physics/applied math, or anyone with experience in undergraduate thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and vector calculus. |
