1.0 out of 5 stars There are betters out this. This book teaches bad habits.
A book of very, very basic scripts that assumes way too much and teaches you bad habits for hypnosis. (It uses the beach metaphor way too much--what if the subject had a drowning experience?!?) The author also assumes: 1) the client will accept the standardized reality of the script and thus no one is unique, 2) you, as a hypnotist, know what to prescribe to the client...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great starter for beginners but...., September 17, 2001
This review is from: Hypnosis for Beginners: Reach New Levels of Awareness & Achievement (For Beginners (Llewellyn's)) (Paperback)
I understand the variety of many reviewers on here but felt compelled to share my experience with this book.

First of all, for any "beginner" as the title indicates, this is in my opinion a helpful, positive selection. This book was the first I ever purchased on the subject and I am pleased that it was. Had I read any other book on this subject, prior to this one, I almost certainly would have been discouraged from pursuing hypnosis/hypnotherapy further.

I found this book easy and fun to read, while also instilling confidence from the beginning. The majority of books I have since read on the subject are fairly dry and often take some understanding of specific terminology to grasp. But none the less contain often times necessary information for any true seeker.

As far as hypnotizing, I personally read Hewitt's scripts directly from this book, within my first week of reading it, and had success with my first subject. With only the minor issue of having to repeat the induction (due to my own lack of confidence and the sitters skepticism), but ultimately resulting in a deep "trance state". I have since moved on but still use many of his tips and techniques in my own personal scripts.

Due to it's low purchase price, ease of reading, and the fact that it covers several areas of interest to a "beginner", I feel this book is a worthwhile purchase and recommend it to anyone who is just starting out or even has a curiosity with the topic.

On the other hand, if you are a more serious seeker, or have some knowledge and background in this area; thus looking for more serious instructions and information on this topic there are more appropriate choices out there. I would also recommend, that with this book, all "beginners" consider purchasing a book that focusing more about induction as the induction method Hewitt uses is not always as effective as it can be, should the inductor and sitter not be completely confident about the success.

I have read several of Hewitt's books and feel his writing is easy, smooth and comprehendible. But as several of his title's indicate they are for "beginners".

To my disappointed his arrogance is noted as a downfall to anyone who reads his books, as he references that in general only "his" books were needed for information and guidance in the areas of his books focus on. I have found, on the contrary, the more I read from various sources about any subject the more I learn. Every view point offers a unique perspective giving you the best possible way to gain individuality and establish your own concepts.

A book of very, very basic scripts that assumes way too much and teaches you bad habits for hypnosis. (It uses the beach metaphor way too much--what if the subject had a drowning experience?!?) The author also assumes: 1) the client will accept the standardized reality of the script and thus no one is unique, 2) you, as a hypnotist, know what to prescribe to the client (diet, exercise, etc.), and 3) the hypnotist does all the work and accepts 100% responsibility. And, the book does a poor job at explaining trance and hypnosis, even as a simple introduction. There are better books out there that teaches hypnosis. Look for a book by Hunter or, even better but a little more complex, Gilligan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just an Introduction to Hypnosis for Absolute Beginners, October 29, 2004
This review is from: Hypnosis for Beginners: Reach New Levels of Awareness & Achievement (For Beginners (Llewellyn's)) (Paperback)
If you know absolutely nothing about hypnosis and you want to get some basic understanding, you can go ahead and read this book. It will guide you step-by-step in your first experiments with hypnosis.

The book provides you with some general overview of hypnosis and areas of use. It also provides you with hypnosis scripts. One warning regarding hypnosis scripts in general - any given script may or may not work for you, so instead of using scripts verbatim as they are presented, feel free to alter the wording to meet your particular needs and preferences.

The secret to your success with hypnosis is in your ability to use your imagination in a way that the desired outcome will feel REAL to you now. When you work with pre-written scripts, you may stumble upon some that work perfectly for you and others that will not do much for you. The entire purpose of the scripts is to help guide your imagination. Once you become experienced with using self-hypnosis, you won't need any more scripts. And even if you are practicing hypnosis on others, once you learn it well, then you also won't be using written scripts, but will guide the person into hypnosis in a way that is appropriate for the particular person.

But, well, it's true you have to begin somewhere and this book is alright to give you an idea, a taste of hypnosis. Just keep in mind that there is much more to hypnosis and if you really want to master it, keep reading, learning and experimenting.

On the positive side, this book is very easy to read. It will guide you through some sample sessions, different routines, and different applicatins of hypnosis.

There are much better books on hypnosis and if the information provided in this book doesn't work for you, it doesn't mean that you are not a good "hypnosis subject" - only that another approach may be more suitable for you - so don't stop with this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for anyone interested in hypnosis., January 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Hypnosis for Beginners: Reach New Levels of Awareness & Achievement (For Beginners (Llewellyn's)) (Paperback)
Hypnosis for Beginners is an excellent book for anyone wishing to learn more about self-hypnosis and the hypnosis of others. It includes complete scripts on regression, self-regression, self-hypnotism, and a full six session script for weight loss, teaching you routines for induction and deep relaxation that can be used for any purpose you desire. Hewitt breaks every session into routines which can be modified to meet your specific needs. The author thoroughly explains the state of hypnosis, many useful applications of it, and includes a full chapter of suggestions you can use to broaden your mind and improve yourself in many ways, all worded in an easy-to-read fashion. I have read this book several times and have found it extremely useful. Anyone interested in hypnosis, especially those who wish to begin using it to enhance the lives of themselves and others, should consider this book a must.

1.0 out of 5 stars There should be a ZERO start rating!, October 6, 2005
This review is from: Hypnosis for Beginners: Reach New Levels of Awareness & Achievement (For Beginners (Llewellyn's)) (Paperback)
This book is awful! What else can I say?

If you want an idea of what this book is really like, ignore all the obviously planted reviews and go straight to the book shop and review it yourself. His long-winded, disorganized, self-absorbed rant is a perfect example of what the book offers: amateurish poor quality. I would gladly have had understanding for an impassioned, inexperienced writer. But this writer's plea for "positive vibes" is hypocritical given the misleading, dishonest tactics he has used to promote himself. If at all possible, I strongly suggest that potential buyers borrow or review a store copy before parting with their money.

This will only disappoint!

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST hypnosis book I've encountered! Unmatched!, February 21, 2005
This review is from: Hypnosis for Beginners: Reach New Levels of Awareness & Achievement (For Beginners (Llewellyn's)) (Paperback)
I've read Discovering The Power of Self-Hypnosis by Dr. Stanley Fisher, Strategic Self-Hypnosis by Roger Straus, and Self-Hypnosis by Henry Leo Bolduc, but NONE compare to Hypnosis For Beginners: Reach New Levels of Awareness & Achievement by William W. Hewitt!

After browsing through the other books, it was obvious to an amateur like myself that Hewitt was better then them all. The other books, for the most part, seem to "talk" about hypnosis more than actually allow you to practice it. This is an obvious detriment. One only needs a brief history and get it done with. Hewitt's book gives many different suggestions on general hypnosis, and....you even get information and a "full" script for both past and current life regression, which none of the other authors give you.

I actually thought this book would have the least amount of data and helpful information, because it's not as "flashy" looking; looks is not what I'm looking for, but substance, and I get plenty of that from this book!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good place to start., March 4, 2006
This review is from: Hypnosis for Beginners: Reach New Levels of Awareness & Achievement (For Beginners (Llewellyn's)) (Paperback)
Hypnosis for Beginners was a good place to start off with learning hypnotism. Hewitt explains a little bit about the history, and what is going on in the brain when hypnosis is induced. This book is directed more towards clinical/therapy types of hypnosis, however I added my own words to make it into an entertaining night with my friends. Hewitt's induction methods are good, but it is a lot of page turning to follow his lead. Hewitt has several scripts for specific therapy, and detailed instructions on self-hypnosis, also. Overall this is a good book if you want to learn to how induce hypnosis, but it does take a little practice and creativity so your "victim" is thinking about relaxing, and not how inexperienced you are.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Starter Book, October 16, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Hypnosis for Beginners: Reach New Levels of Awareness & Achievement (For Beginners (Llewellyn's)) (Paperback)
As the title indicates, this is a great way to get started in self hypnosis. The author writes with great knowledge of the subject and is interested in using hypnosis for the good of his reader. I found it leaving me with a desire to learn more about hypnosis. The only downfall with this book is that it seems to give the reader the routines instead of teaching how to make routines for yourself. Still, I have read it more than once and would highly recommend it to any one who is interested in getting started in self hypnosis. A GREAT book for beginners.

William Hewitt has always been my mentor, for years I've studied his work and followed his understanding of Hypnosis and after many years of doing Hypnotherapy I am still learning from this fantastic writer. Thank you for all you have done in the name of Hypnotherapy.... Hershey Hypnosis Center, J.H. Dalton C.Ht.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good book overall......, April 24, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Hypnosis for Beginners: Reach New Levels of Awareness & Achievement (For Beginners (Llewellyn's)) (Paperback)
I found this book to be a pretty good starting point for someone who wants to learn and use hypnosis to help themselves and others. There is detailed, yet simple examples of actual hypnosis strategies that if followed step by step can and will get results. The only disappointment I found in the book was the small, useless chapter on stage hypnosis. If you are thinking of buying this book for help with that particualr genre, save your money...Mr. Hewitt is strongly against stage hypnosis. Even though I can see his point on why, I was still disappointed. Willy...why put it in the book at all if you aren't really going to talk about it....? Besides that, the book is pretty darn good. 4-stars....
