5.0 out of 5 stars The red pill - or the blue ?
In the first few pages of the book, Roy Masters shows how virtually every one of us lives our entire life in a hypnotic state. As if this isn't humiliating enough, he then goes on in over a dozen chapters to show exactly how this is so in every major area of our lives - interpersonal relationships, personal habits and addictions, and even in our approaches to...

3.0 out of 5 stars Some good concepts, but fails to totally break free of tradition
This book written back in 1988 says a lot of very good stuff. If you are having problems in your life, this book might just be enough to wake you up to the understanding that you may have been hypnotized by life. Masters has a good grasp of how the mind works. Many fundamentalist Christians see him as a cult figure as his core belief is that you need to live a good...

In the first few pages of the book, Roy Masters shows how virtually every one of us lives our entire life in a hypnotic state. As if this isn't humiliating enough, he then goes on in over a dozen chapters to show exactly how this is so in every major area of our lives - interpersonal relationships, personal habits and addictions, and even in our approaches to religion.

Once you get started reading this book, you'll either declare Roy Masters to be a mad man and throw the book away, or you'll at last see yourself as you truely are, and begin to awaken from a life-long dream.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some good concepts, but fails to totally break free of tradition, October 30, 2009
This review is from: Hypnosis of Life (Paperback)
This book written back in 1988 says a lot of very good stuff. If you are having problems in your life, this book might just be enough to wake you up to the understanding that you may have been hypnotized by life. Masters has a good grasp of how the mind works. Many fundamentalist Christians see him as a cult figure as his core belief is that you need to live a good "Christian" and moral life, but you can't do that while under any spell- including fundamentalist Christianity! In other words, just because you say JESUS JESUS JESUS, and can quote scripture verses and go to Church on Sunday does not necessarily mean you are "saved". Since so many Americans believe in the "instant" Christianity as seen on TV- raise your hand or say a prayer and "poof" you're going to heaven, this has caused many to view Masters as controversial. This book gets at the core teachings of just what belief really is and if you can in fact really "believe" anything while under the spirit of hypnotic suggestion- take that Benny Hinn! I remember years ago he debated a fundamentalist Christian and tried to explain that real faith is when it lives inside you, not just something you think is true in your mind. This drove the fundamentalist crazy! Masters just kept trying to explain, but to no avail. The area where I tend to think Masters gets off the track is when he gets locked into some heavy duality. God here, Satan there, good here, evil there, etc etc. So as intelligent as Roy Masters can be, he is at his core a pretty fundamental and judgmental guy. This book would be a good read for anyone who wants to get out of their own mind and or hypnotic trance. I do not recommend this book if you have been transformed enough to move beyond duality and "get" that real faith is being clear in your soul about the nature of reality and living by grace.
