About the Author

Roy Masters—who in his 80s continues to broadcast the longest-running counseling show in talk radio history—started his journey toward understanding human nature in the most unlikely of places. Growing up in pre-WWII England, he watched a performer easily put his volunteer subjects under a hypnotic spell and induced each of them to do strange and outlandish things. How, the young Roy wondered, could a smiling, personable stranger cause well-dressed, educated, competent adults to forget their names? Puzzled by the mysterious power the hypnotist had exercised over his subjects, Roy distinctly remembers pondering the question: “Why can’t hypnotism be used to make people act sensibly, rather than foolishly?” Inspired by the idea of harnessing this baffling force for good, he later pursued the art of hypnotism and established a successful hypnotherapy practice. Over years of counseling as well as personal experience, Roy realized that the root of the power of negative suggestion lay in our wrong emotional response, and so he began to search for a way to help people overcome the hypnotic power of stress. After years of searching, he discovered a remarkably effective meditation method, and has been teaching it—with spectacular results—ever since. For over 50 years Roy counsels people primarily through his internationally syndicated daily radio program Advice Line, where callers discuss their most intimate problems and find genuine help and healing. He has served as a daily voice of sanity and conscience to his listeners, with the uncanny ability to zero in quickly on core problems. As the institutional home for his counseling work, Masters’ formed the Foundation of Human Understanding in 1961. Through his daily radio broadcasts, lectures, seminars, his 18 books, countless audio and video programs—and the Internet—he has helped millions worldwide. He has also established a successful prison outreach and an innovative private K-12 school. Beyond all this, and at a time in life when most people would have long since retired, an energetic Roy Masters is delving deeply into yet another long-time interest—physics and cosmology. He has authored “Finding God in Physics” as well as a more technical treatise, “Gravity Driven Universe” and has lectured on “Electricity from Gravity” at the American Physical Society in Denver. Roy Masters and his wife, Ann, have been married since 1952. They have five grown children and 18 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

More About the Author

Roy Masters--who in his 80s continues to broadcast the longest-running counseling show in talk radio history-- started his journey toward understanding human nature in the most unlikely of places.

Growing up in pre-WWII England, one day as a teen he walked through a vaudeville show in the south coast town of Brighton, when a stage hypnotist caught his eye. He watched, fascinated, as the performer easily put his volunteer subjects under a hypnotic spell and induced each of them to do strange and outlandish things, like dancing around the stage with a broom, and forgetting their own names.

How, the young Roy wondered, could a smiling, personable stranger cause well-dressed, educated, competent adults to forget their names? Puzzled by the mysterious power the hypnotist had exercised over his subjects, Roy distinctly remembers pondering the question: "Why can't hypnotism be used to make people act sensibly, rather than foolishly?" Inspired by the idea of harnessing this baffling force for good, he later pursued the art of hypnotism and established a successful hypnotherapy practice.

It was during those years of practicing hypnosis therapeutically, however, that Masters made his central and pivotal discovery about the nature of human beings' emotional problems, addictions and complexes.

As clinical psychologist Ron Carlson, Ph.D., would later describe this breakthrough: "Roy Masters' books reveal with penetrating insight that, unbeknownst to most of us, we are tethered to our thoughts in a destructive, hypnotic way which forms the basis of our emotional and mental problems."

In other words, Masters had discovered that people didn't really need hypnosis, because their core problem was that they were already hypnotized--not by a clever stage performer, but by the stresses, pressures and seductions of daily life. After all, it stood to reason that whatever little-understood forces were at play on a hypnotist's stage must also exist in real life as well. Virtually everyone, it turns out, is far too easily influenced by the intimidation, impatience and cruelty of other people, which in turn reprograms them in negative and destructive ways.

Over years of counseling as well as personal experience, Roy realized that the root of the power of negative suggestion lay in our wrong emotional response, and so he began to search for a way to help people overcome the hypnotic power of stress. After years of searching, he discovered a remarkably effective meditation method, and has been teaching it--with spectacular results--ever since.

This "meditation exercise"--a simple observation technique called Be Still & Know, from the Psalm verse, "Be still and know that I am God"--is at the core not only of Masters' unmatched track record in helping people overcome even the most serious mental-emotional problems, but now comprises the centerpiece of a successful program within the U.S. military ("Patriot Outreach") that is helping thousands of U.S. military personnel and their families to overcome the ravages of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

This is the most profound and revealing book that I have ever read, second only to my Bible.

After suffering a heart attack two weeks after major surgery I became intensely aware that there were some major problems within myself, only I did not have the words to express. What resulted was a deep desire, a yearning to understand not just God, but myself and my role as husband and father. I was emotionally and physically crushed. Suddenly, the future that I envisioned was gone and the past with all its glories and victories (and failures) was empty. Time was running out and all I could do was pray to God that he would grant me understanding that I could pass on to my children while I was still here.

The words, "Be Still And KNOW That I Am GOD" became a re-occurring theme on my consciousness. Then through a series of events, I happened to hear Roy Masters' syndicated radio show for the very first time. Roy was talking to a caller about the effects of being "hypnotized" through a process of social, religious and political conditioning that promised it was taking us closer to our desires but in reality was destroying our very souls.

This book gave me awareness that life is the here and now. All the thinking about the past and all the planning for the future were the conditioning that kept me trapped within a hypnotic state that was destroying my life.

Facing the truth, the reality of the situation is truly a liberating experience because it brings with it an awareness of the manipulations of social, political and religious systems and allows the individual to break free of its evil grip. This is precisely why this book will no doubt, come under the most egregious assault for the threat it represents to those in power who want to keep the masses blinded.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who seeks the truth.

I am very familiar with Roy Masters and have read many of his books. I believe this one is the best written. Mr. Masters writing style may difficult for some. I believe his writing assumes the reader already has a fairly solid grasp on the concepts and principles that he has espoused for decades. I still at times have difficulty connecting the points he makes together enough to follow him all the way to the principle he is attempting to lay out for the reader, but maybe it's just me. That being said I love this book. This is not the kind of book you breeze through and never touch again. The weightiness and depth of the subject matter demand consideration and contemplation to wring out the wisdom of Mr. Masters insight.

I've heard Roy say in a few of his online webcasts that the subject matter he discusses is of a type that is very difficult to understand simply through the explanation of it. It is a subject matter that is deeper than mere intellect which is why many cannot understand it. These people often times out of a sense of their own pride fullness will determine that since they don't understand it that it must not be understandable, which of course leads to demeaning insults and criticism of Mr. Masters.

So I will say this.... some people "get it" and some don't. The ones that don't "get it" probably won't "get" any thing Roy talks about.

The ones that do their understanding of it unlocks in their minds and hearts a new universe of knowledge and awareness that they never knew before. They begin at that moment to see people and themselves differently. What they have found is understanding, understanding of people. And when you understand people, REALLY UNDERSTAND PEOPLE, you can understand the world.

A enlightening read delving into all the things nobody ever taught you about before now. I think most importantly, understanding Roy's teachings in this book will impact all of the relationships you will ever encounter in life; your parents, children, friends, spouse, boss, co-workers, strangers, government, God, and probably most of all - you. It's a manual that should be handed out to everybody entering this world for study and reference. I think it would be accurate to say that we were born with a purpose and a guidance system that most of us have forgotten how to use or apply. This is the result of the inevitable traumas we experience starting at an early age, and continuing throughout our lives, which leads to confusion in our interpretation of our world; that we may not be consciously aware of today. Roy brings you carefully back to that place where you are free to be objective again and see things the way they really are, so that you can respond appropriately to the world around you. An extremely valuable book in my opinion. Thank you Roy Masters for writing this one.

I read this book recently, it has been spiritually enlightening... it helped me understand life and how to relate with my boss and coworkers in a meaningful non-hypnotic way. Roy awakens what we knew all along but doubted or couldn't fully explain. I will likely read this book again in the future and still learn more--it is that good!

I won't see the world through the same eyes again after reading even the first chapter of this book. It clearly describes what's going on around us, why people do what they do, and how to deal with them. I've read other of Roy Master's books and been a long-time listener. What's different about this book is that it's approachable to those not familiar with Roy's prior work and it's absolutely practical.
