5.0 out of 5 stars A Lasting Solution for Persistent Pain, October 17, 2002
This review is from: Hypnotize Yourself Out of Pain Now!: A Powerful, User Friendly Program for Anyone Searching for Immediate Pain Relief (Paperback)
As the author, I wrote this book for people who have tried everything to get their persistent pain to leave. I have compiled many techniques for helping people in pain regain control over their pain and diminish the suffering element.

Self hypnosis is the best non-drug remedy for relieving pain that won't go away. I use it myself because I have chronic pain (fibromylagia, chronic fatigue, spinal disease and arthritis).

The book clearly explains what HYPNOSIS is and what it is NOT. Readers are guided to choose the right self hypnosis method for them. Self-hypnotic pain coping methods covered (the "6 D's") include: Deep relaxation, De-catastrophizing, Direct behavior modification, Distraction, Distortion of pain sensations, and Dissociation from pain.

To my knowledge, this is the first self-help book devoted solely to self hypnosis for pain management. The goal is
NO MORE PAIN. The method is self-hypnosis. The result is less pain and less suffering. The bottom line is that if you have a chronic disease, "pain may be mandatory, but suffering is optional".

This book can be used with or without the help of a therapist.

Three years ago I purchased this book to help with challenges from living with scoliosis and related leg pain. I half-heartedly read book. Of course, 3 years later my challenges increased so that the old maxim "When the student is ready, the teacher appears" became self evident. I revisited the book and have benefitted tremendously from the clear, concise, steps, that one can take to break down the cycle of pain. I also like the fact that there are a myriad of choices of relaxing or meditative exercises for you to chose from. This lets you pick and chose what works best for you. I only wish that there were a CD available as an accompaniment to the book. I am grateful to the author and hope to read more from him in the future

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent self-hypnosis for pain management, May 23, 2008
The Weight, Hypnotherapy And You, Weight Reduction Program: An NLP And Hypnotherapy Practitioner Manual

Sometimes, I read a book on hypnosis that is to eloquent, so well-organized, so understandable, and written with such clarity and sensitivity that I wish I'd written it myself. That's how I felt about reading Hypnotize Yourself Out of Pain Now (Second Edition). This is the quintessential book on self-hypnosis for pain management.

Eimer first covers topics such as types of pain, the physiology of pain, pain and neurology, and the pain gate control theory, explaining how hypnosis can reduce chronic pain by closing off the neurological transmission of sensation to the brain from the site of previous injuries. He also discusses how to evaluate pain and how to evaluate one's coping strategies. The book then moves into the topics of hypnosis and self-hypnosis. Eimer acquaints the reader with basic information about hypnosis and then teaches eight methods of inducing self-hypnosis.

Next, the author provides a primer on pain management, covering the "six D's" of pain management: Deep Relaxation, Decatastrophizing, Direction, Distraction, Distortion, and Dissociation. He tells the reader how to match the pain management method to the type of pain, and gives self-hypnosis processes and self-suggestions in each "D" category. The pain management skills in this book include behavioral coping strategies, cognitive interventions, and relaxation methods.

This book also covers advanced self-hypnosis processes such as instant relaxation, a self-healing ritual, mindfulness meditation, ideo-motor signaling, and ego state therapy. I counted over 50 exercises for pain management in this book, so there is surely at least one that will help any reader who is willing to invest the time to learn and practice self-hypnosis. The book comes with a companion CD covers what hypnosis is, pain perception and hypnosis, relaxation with hypnosis, rating and lowering discomfort, pain relief and imagery, healing imagery, therapeutic touch and energy healing, comfort transfer, and stress control. While this book is written for anyone with chronic pain, it is also an excellent reference for hypnotherapists who work with pain reduction. As a chronic pain survivor myself, I believe this book holds great promise for improving the lives of many.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rating depends on reader and use: 2 to 5 stars, September 27, 2010

To provide context for my review, I am a behavioral medicine physician, who specializes in hypnotherapy for pain management and have developed and teach a 200+ hour medical and pain management hypnotherapy certification course. Hypnotize Yourself Out of Pain has some great material. There are a lot of methods presented, so there are many potential approaches and practices that can be developed from what Eimer presents.

I have found the book to be more appropriate for a mind-body pain management practitioner than for a patient. That said, I have used it as a sort of workbook where I translated the concepts and helped patients develop exercises that were realistic for them to do on their own. I believe it takes a motivated patient to stick with the book without becoming overwhelmed. I would recommend it in the way I use it, as a source for co-developing material patients can explore to find methods of pain relief that work well for them.

While I received some great ideas to use with my patients. However, none of my patients patients got very far into the book because they said it was too complicated and difficult to follow. Given my particular personality, if I was a patient suffering from chronic pain, I would last about 15 minutes with the book. People who are more patient would last longer. Some people have the special character required to take the book and run with it by adapting the approaches and methods to their own needs. I have found these kinds of people generally benefit tremendously from just about anything they read that has useful information because they bulldog their way through it. So, I recommend the book highly for some uses and some people and less highly for others. A coworker of mine borrowed the book, but could not get past chapter 2 for the same reason several of my patients could not read it - too complicated and too much information packed in too tightly. On the other hand, a patient of mine got a copy and probably cut the number of sessions we spent in half because she was very diligent in using the methods inside. I trust that most people know enough about themselves to know how useful this kind of book might be for them. So choose wisely.

While I would be cautious about recommending the book for patients before getting to know them, I would not hesitate to recommend it to professionals who practice hypnosis for pain management. So, for most lay readers, it gets 2 stars, for lay readers with more fortitude, I give 3 to 4 stars and for extremely highly motivated lay readers, I give 5 stars. For most professional readers, it gets 4 stars if it is utilized as a way of developing exercises to use with patients for both in office sessions and for co-developing home self management exercises. For professionals who are already practicing hypnosis and do not want any support developing self management exercises with and for patients, I would give the book 3 stars. It is probably notable that I have been using the book with patients for six years, so I found it a worthwhile investment.

Because I have found that most lay people find the book hard to use, I decided that there should be a book that was more user friendly for patients. So I began writing my own. I found it is a lot easier to criticize someone else's book before writing my own. After getting 270ish pages into writing, I have a great deal more respect for anyone who writes a book aimed toward a lay audience - even at my stage of writing I have lost track of how many all-nighters I have done (not pleasant even in residency, and brutal in one's 40s). So I can only imagine what it has taken Eimer to write a book geared to lay readers. My hat goes off to him. I mention the difficulty of writing to a lay audience because it is very different than writing to a professional audience, and much more challenging. For example, I am also writing a text for professionals and it is infinitely easier because I can fall back on jargon and a more academic style (perhaps lazy, but true). By the way, this is not a plug (since I am not telling you the titles or anything about them), I am merely mentioning it to emphasize my respect for the author's efforts.

Good luck on your choice for a book that fits your needs.

This book is a powerful tool to help people in pain gain some measure of control over that pain, and minimize the impact of pain on their function and quality of life. The writing is understandable and enjoyable. There are many options and styles of self-hypnosis offered. I recommend this book highly, and use it myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you are determined to manage you pain, this is the book!, July 7, 2010

I have chronic pain and I treat people who have chronic pain. This is not only an excellent book on using self-hypnosis to reduce chronic pain and suffering (The author is no fly-by-night. He is a highly respected expert on hypnosis), it is one of the best chronic pain self-management books. Although there are other good books available on chronic pain (see my other reviews), if I could only recommend one, for the committed, I think it would probably be this one. If you are ready to learn how to greatly reduce suffering from chronic pain, I strongly recommend this book.

I am a clinical psychotherapist. Dr. Eimer's book is invaluable in helping patients of serious personal injury manage their own pain. Dr. Eimer is the victim of chronic pain himself. The CD included with his book provides the patient with the ability to successfully initiate their own hypnotic inductions anytime, day or night. Along with my clinical treatment, I provide a copy of Dr. Eimer's book for any of my patients who are serious about self-managing their own pain. I strongly endorse Anthony Scratchley's philosophy written in Addiction Today Magazine that "...to tame pain, we must use our brain."

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice supplement to any multifaceted pain management approach., November 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
To be quite honest, I haven't really gotten into the meat of this product yet. But from what I've seen so far, its really quite well done. I have high hopes that it will assist me in developing one more way to cope w severe chronic pain. And it comes with a CD, which I did not realize when I ordered it. THAT was a nice surprise, just because its hard to reach a meditative state when you're turning pages. ;)

5.0 out of 5 stars Being hit by a Mac Truck 30 years ago., October 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I was hit by a Mac Truck 30 years and sometime the pain feels like it was just yesterday. This book has given me wonderful pointers and numerous hypnotic scripts that have lessen the pain dramatically. It has quick fixes for relaxing the pain before it is out of control. Is very well written, maybe a little complicated at times (hard to understand for a laymen), but over all pretty easy to read. Every page you are learning something to help relieve pain.

The CD is worth the money alone, I listen to it daily for pain relief.

Thank you Doctor for making life more tolerable.

Rich
