4.0 out of 5 stars hypoglycemia for dummies
As someone who is sick of "being in the fog" from my hypoglycemia I greatly welcomed this book. I needed a book to talk TO me about all of the overwhelming info for treating this and not another book that gave a lot of medical jargon I don't need or understand. I love this book for its nonwordy descriptions of the basics of hypoglycemia- I could actually read this book...

1.0 out of 5 stars Think twice before buying this book which gives wrong information for hypoglycemics.
I would advise against this book. The authors are ill-informed and suggest such things as kava kava which has been shown to cause liver failure and the recipes contain white flour and white bread which is detrimental to blood sugar. I recommend books written by those who actually suffer from hypoglycemia such as "Hypoglycemia: The Classic Healthcare Handbook" by...

4.0 out of 5 stars hypoglycemia for dummies, May 13, 2003
This review is from: Hypoglycemia for Dummies (Paperback)
As someone who is sick of "being in the fog" from my hypoglycemia I greatly welcomed this book. I needed a book to talk TO me about all of the overwhelming info for treating this and not another book that gave a lot of medical jargon I don't need or understand. I love this book for its nonwordy descriptions of the basics of hypoglycemia- I could actually read this book and understand it all. The writers do a good job discussing the symptoms and what is happening in the body for hypoglycemia to occur. Just like my dietician prescribed for me, Cheryl Chow discusses eating a 40 carb 30 protein and 30 fats early on and then increase carbs if your body allows it. It shows a new "hypoglycemic" food pyramid that shows bread, grains, pasta moved 2 steps up and the veggie group is what you should have more of. (THANK YOU!!) The book does seem to contradict itself in places when discussing carbs(or they may be just trying to say everyone is going to be different).

The only things that bothered me about the book is that, while it does discuss a lot of different topics such as herbal supplements, vitamins, exercise in detail it would discuss other topics with just a sentence or two. Usually these were areas that I would want a lot more detail because I'm having difficulty with them. Of course there were some topics discussed that I really did not see why they were relevant (I guess it may help someone else though). The recipe section was a bit disappointing- only 14 recipies. So if you want more try the Low Blood Sugar Cookbook by Patricia and Edward Krimmel (he's hypo too) and also The Zone. The Zone is based on the 40/30/30 plan too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great beginner book!, January 3, 2006
This review is from: Hypoglycemia for Dummies (Paperback)
I read this book as a refresher and cannot imagine a more in-depth explanation of hypoglycemia and how to deal with it--emotionally and physically for beginners.

It does a great job of describing hypo and discussing the condition with friends and family. In addition, it helps explain what you should eat and when is the best time to do so. The only drawback I found was that the recipes included some of the things they say you should stay away from. However, after eating healthy and regularly, you will find that you can eat some of those things and not feel the effects. At the end of the day, you need to listen to your body and use the book as a tool.

Finally, I would also recommend reading Body for Life by Bill Phillips. His diet is something that hypo can and should use. He delves into the many different types of proteins and carbohydrates. He also has a Body for Life cookbook that I use 3-4 times per week. His cookbook offers easy to make recipes that would surpise you to find the meals so nutritionally sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, August 2, 2003
This review is from: Hypoglycemia for Dummies (Paperback)
A superb book, written with exceptional clarity that makes it simple to understand the difficult to understand and frequently misunderstood condition of hypoglycemia.
Battling with a condition that requires moderate control of eating habits and exercise is never as easy as it sounds. Ms. Chow seems to realize this and has constructed "Hypoglycemia for Dummies" accordingly.
The book contains bucketloads of information about leading a healthy lifestyle, as well as, perhaps most importantly, advice on setting up the support system needed to maintain that way of life.
Highly recommended -- not just for hyoglycemics, but for anybody interested in living life to the fullest.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is excellent - and hot off the press, July 21, 2003

I've been looking everywhere for a practical and up to date book on hypoglycemia. This one has only been published since a few months ago and I thought I'd give it a try. And a good thing too! Like all the 'Dummies' series it is credible and well-organised, with the information clearly picked out and lots of helpful lists.

Chow and Chow (the authors) take you through all the physical basis for hypoglycemia and how to recognise to what degree it affects you. But they also go on to give lots of helpful advice about diet, exercise, the effect on your moods, etc.

I would really highly recommend this book. If you take it seriously and follow the advice it has the potential to be a real life-changer. good luck!

4.0 out of 5 stars Learning to Live w/ Hypo, September 13, 2006
This review is from: Hypoglycemia for Dummies (Paperback)
If any of you were the same as me you learned out that you had hypo and the doctor said it's a lot like diabetes so go get a diabetes book and follow the diet. I think the medical field is ill informed about hypo and could take a good lesson from this book. Hypo is a complicated disorder and until you know a lot about it it is hard to control. Hypo for Dummies gives you that knowledge you need. Keep in mind that the writers are practicing eastern medicine physicians, so some things they offer a regular physician of western medicine might not.

This book is a great place to start with though and it gives you the information you need to get started and to possibly follow up with a doctor knowledgable in hypo. I definately recommend the book!

This book is hot off the press just a few months ago. I've bought it and I'd really recommend it. Clearly laid out, lots of quick lists and tips. Chapters on self-diagnosis, doctors diagnosis, and most importantly what you can do for yourself, step-by-step (mostly diet changes).

This book has the potential to be a life-changer and I'd highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hypoglycemia Information From A Non-Diabetic Perspective, August 20, 2006

This review is from: Hypoglycemia for Dummies (Paperback)
After much searching for a book that would focus in on hypoglycemia, I found Chow & Chow's book. Normally, I'm not big on the dummies series however, this particular book covers a wide range of information from diagnosis (and confirmation that you're not crazy) to helpful ways to "help" yourself combat the ups and downs of the rollercoaster ride.

Typically, books on hypoglycemia are written from the perspective of diabetes or "how-to" weight loss. This book focuses in on the condition without passing judgement on any other condition that you may or may not have.

Highly Recommended Sections:
Part 1 - Addressing Your Ups and Downs - Could This Be Hypoglycemia?
Part 3 - Getting Off Your Bleached-Flour Buns and Treating the Problem
Part 5 - Spinning a Network of Support for Yourself

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked Wonders!, December 23, 2004

Now this book is definitely a life saver! Its precise and practical and written in such an easy to understand well formatted manner. The authors have done an incredible job. I've already started working on my diet.
Since I have been on this new diet, all the cravings for junk food have gone. I was someone who lived for sugar and now I do not want any of it. I use to crave coffee in the morning as well but realized I didn't want that wired up feeling & acid stomach. I switched over to a caffeine-free coffee substitute made from soyabeans I found on the net at www.
S o y c o f f e e.c om. It so easy for someone to tell you to eat less, but if you are craving bad foods, eventually you will fail. It was hard and firt but now this diet has helped bring down my craving for junk food. If you were like me and cannot wait for your next slice of cake and at the same time really want to change your lifestyle, try this.

A through understanding of the condition with the help of this fantastic book and a little diet control has worked wonders for me.
