5.0 out of 5 stars quiet, portable and effective, November 7, 2009

This review is from: Hyundai HYU-40AE Energy-Star 40-Pint Dehumidifier (Kitchen)
I've been using this for a couple of months and it seems to work more efficiently---and certainly quieter--than our old dehumidifier. It has an air filter, which many dehumidifiers don't, which means it won't lose efficiency over time as dust collects in the condenser coils.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall, a good dehumidifier, December 9, 2009

I ordered this to replace an LG whose fan died. So far, it has done a good job of drying out my 24' X 20' basement. It keeps the humidity somewhere between 35% and 40% when set on the continuous setting, high-fan speed. I was surprised by how loud the fan is and how quiet the compressor is. The LG was exactly opposite. Also, it generates more heat than the LG. The air coming out of the unit is actually pretty warm. That's fine now in the cooler weather, but I am worried that it will add too much heat to my basement in warm weather, making it harder and more expensive to cool (my basement is finished with a ductless split heating and cooling system). I use the drain hose, not the bucket. Just a note to purchasers: The adaptor for connecting the short tube supplied with Hyundai HYU-40AE to a standard threaded garden hose is tucked into the foam packing, and being white-on-white, is hard to see. Don't throw it out by mistake - I almost did! One star off for the heat and fan noise.

I ordered this product because I was having dampness issues in my garage. I bought this one because it was well-reviewed, in my price range, and relatively small.

I've been using it continuously for many months, and it has performed flawlessly. I use the humidity-based option, which allows me to make sure my garage is never too damp while at the same time not running the dehumidifier constantly - it runs only when it needs to, and it seems to keep it in the humidity range that I specify.

One of my favorite features (having owned a few dehumidifiers) is that the dehumidifier can be transformed to use with a hose (so you don't need to keep emptying it) and back to using the built-in bucket by simply removing and replacing a plug. Many dehumidifiers force you to drill holes or otherwise permanently alter the product to use it with a hose, and this one makes it a trivial and quick change (both ways).

Energy use seems to be minimal for a dehumidifier (they all suck a lot of energy, but this one seems relatively miserly). I recommend it without reservation.
