Book Description

March 3, 2006
Ms. Ranee A. Spina, an alluring Venus of today, uses humor to empower young women to lower the divorce rate. This is a book about self-awareness and the power of choice. The focus is on the commitment a woman must make to herself before making a commitment to a long-term relationship. This humorous, but no nonsense, conversational book should be purchased by two groups of people. 1) Single women seventeen and up who have questions regarding self-worth and relationships, and 2) people in those same women's lives that want to send a message but are uncomfortable being the messenger. I AM Before "I Do" is an empowering road map for women, leading them out of the mysterious realm of chance happiness. Every page of this beautifully-designed book is a wake-up call to the would-be victim of avoidable heartache. It says what many family and friends are too timid, too tired, or forbidden to say out loud. I AM Before "I Do" was a Fresh Voices 2006 Finalist and the Winner of the USA Book News 2006 National Book Award. Ms. Spina is a Relationship and Leadership speaker who performs across the country.

More About the Author

Ranee Alison Spina has found her calling in helping young people navigate their relationship choices. For over 8 years, she has helped the love-struck tackle their most heart-breaking, intimate challenges. In 2003, with the outline for her first book I AM before "I DO," she took a leap of faith onto the college lecture circuit and a new style of speaker was born.

It all began in 2001 with Java Relationship Night at a coffee house in Los Angeles. One day, Ranee received a call from the executive producer at Dick Clark's The Other Half airing on NBC daytime. Shortly after a brief guest spot, Ranee became a regular on the show alongside hosts Mario Lopez and Danny Bonaduce. Fast forward to today, she has succeeded in changing the mindset of thousands of women who have read her book or attended one of her live lectures. She is on a lifelong mission to give readers and audiences around the world the distinct advantage when making relationship choices. "In short," says Ranee, "I think women have the power to drastically reduce our insane divorce rate. I am tired of women blaming men."

Most public speakers proclaim to be "inspirational" or "motivational" to their audiences. Ranee believes that if you need to be motivated or inspired from someone else, you will continually need reassurance from that person. Instead, she strives to be a catalyst for her audience with a fresh point of view to common relationship issues we all face each day. Her uncompromising honesty about sex and relationships arouses age-old issues with humor and candor.

What does Ranee want for you? By giving you a fresh perspective and the tools necessary, she wants YOU to become a fearless, intelligent, open-eyed, experienced, confident, loving, and in-turn the most lovable woman out there on this planet.

Raised in the Philadelphia suburbs, Ranee attended New York University's College of Business and Public Administration. She relocated to Los Angeles to be in the entertainment business and now lives in "The OC". When she is not crisscrossing the country to speak on college campuses, she is working on her next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good advice!, August 1, 2006
By
This review is from: I AM Before "I Do" (Hardcover)
Do you need him? Want him? Love him? When you get involved in a significant relationship, do you analyze all potential scenarios? Do you talk about what you want to do in ten years, or even fifty?

I have a friend who had a vasectomy at age 21. His wife-to-be knew that he would be unable to have children, but after two years of marriage she was pushing him to get a reversal so they could have a child.

This book would have been perfect for her! It's a blend of common sense, getting in touch with your inner self, listening to your mother, aunt, or grandma's voice in the back of your head--along with workbook-like activities to make you more cognizant of your situation.

Every other page has a meaningful, timely quote that gets you thinking. A cute addition is that at the end of every nice compact chapter a box gives you three options to check:

1) I totally get this chapter,
2) I should re-read this chapter, and
3) Blank (fill in name) needs to read this chapter.

Spina encourages you to think about what you want in perspective mate by getting you to think about your own situation and personality, and then highlighting what to look out for. She advocates having a balance between keeping your individuality and sharing yourself with your partner.

Tea Leoni says it all in her quote, "We realized how well we worked together. We encouraged each other's strengths and supported each others weaknesses." That's what we all strive for in a partnership.

Armchair Interviews says: Great for women looking to get involved for the first time or after a divorce. This book provides superb advice that will ring true to most women.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let Ranee be the "older, wiser" sister, July 18, 2006
This review is from: I AM Before "I Do" (Hardcover)
Ranee is like your older, wiser sister who tries to help you learn from her experiences.

She provides some helpful insights for women on getting their lives in order before choosing a life partner. In the movie Runaway Bride, Julia Roberts character is like a chameleon, adapting her style to whichever boyfriend she has at the time. Eventually, she figures out what she likes, needs, and wants for her life.

Similarly, Ranee's book helps women figure out what they want BEFORE they get married; and in doing so, will prevent women from being Runaway Brides.

This review is from: I AM Before "I Do" (Hardcover)
I believe this is a must read before a decision is made to get married. The book has many life lessons that can be learned. This will save someone time. And time has a value all to itself.
