Biography

Elvis Aaron Presley was born to Vernon and Gladys Presley in a two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8, 1935. His twin brother, Jessie Garon, was stillborn, leaving Elvis to grow up as an only child. He and his parents moved to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1948, and Elvis graduated from Humes High School there in 1953.

Elvis’ musical influences were the pop and country music ... Read more in Amazon's Elvis Presley Store

Editorial Reviews

I AM AN ELVIS FAN, was created to invite fans, from the most die-hard devotees to the more casual admirers, to vote for their favorite recordings by Elvis from seven musical genres. These categories, which survey the broad musical spectrum Elvis covered throughout his long and varied career, were '50s, '60s, Country, Movies, Love Songs, Gospel and In Concert. During the same voting period, Elvis Presley Enterprises also invited fans to upload photos of themselves to be used in an exclusive Elvis photo mosaic. The mosaic, comprised of thousands of fans' images, is also used as the cover of this album package. So after casting hundreds of thousands of votes, the fans have spoken, and here you have it. I AM AN ELVIS FAN a compilation FOR Elvis fans, BY Elvis fans.

3.0 out of 5 stars I'm an Elvis fan too...But give me a break! July 31, 2012
Format:Audio CD
The concept of this cd is simple. Fans from all over the world voted on their favorite Elvis songs to be placed on a single cd. This is not the first time that this concept has been used. That honor goes to the 1980s bootleg "Elvis in Demand" album. At least that album had rare songs, such as the hard to find "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," but this cd seems to be just another "greatest hits" package in disguise. If you are truly an Elvis fan, you already have these songs several times over. Most have recently been remastered on other cds so sound quality should not be an issue, unless they have invented something new in the last couple of months to improve sound. If Sony/BMG wants to really give a true Elvis fan something to sink his/her teeth into, let me offer you my humble wish list:

From the 50s: Most of Elvis's 50s music have already been released and remastered several times over, but anything new would be appreciated. The new "Setlist 1950s" cd, for example, was a great treat.

From the 60s: The remaining movie soundtracks in their original mixes (the 8 that were released sounded awesome!)
A 2 disk remastered Legacy edition of "Pot Luck" (1962) along with "The Lost Album," which contained Elvis's non-soundtrack 1963 recordings.

From the 70s: Rare hard to find singles, such as the before mentioned "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" (especially the ultra rare duet version with Temple Riser).
Elvis's "Fool" Album (1973), "Live on Stage in Memphis," (1974) both have not seen the light of day since the 1990s (except for expensive FTD editions).
An offical soundtrack to "Elvis on Tour" (after 40 years, don't you think it's about time?)

I'm sure other Elvis fans could add to this wish list. Maybe if more fans would make their wishes known, Sony/BMG would release more than just the same old greatest hits packages. Don't get me wrong, all of the songs on this cd are great and well worth having if you do not already do so, but a true Elvis fan will only be paying for songs that he/she already owns with the purchace of this cd.

The depth and breadth of the body of work he left us is simply breathtaking. Needless to say over the decades the music of the "King of Rock and Roll" has been released and re-released, sliced and diced, repackaged, re-mastered, reconfigured and then re-released again. Well, here we go again. In May 2012 at the behest of Elvis Presley Enterprises fans from around the world were invited to vote online for their top 3 Elvis songs in 7 different categories: 50's, 60's, country, movies, love songs, gospel and "in concert". More than 250,000 people participated. The votes were carefully tabulated and the result is an impressive new single disc anthology cleverly entitled "I Am An Elvis Fan". Here you will find an eclectic mix of Elvis Presley's biggest and best recordings spanning his entire career. No doubt about it--this one is a keeper!

The vast majority of the 21 tunes chosen by the fans will certainly come as no surprise to most folks. Songs like "Don't Be Cruel", "All Shook Up", "Kentucky Rain", "Can't Help Falling In Love With You" and "Suspicious Minds" are all very worthy selections. And as I perused the remainder of the track listing I really could not muster any major objections. I was very pleased to see that the voters saw fit to include Elvis' 1968 comeback hit "If I Can Dream". What a great record! As is so often the case with these kinds of anthologies there are going to be some personal favorites that simply did not make the cut. If it were up to me tunes like "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You", "Little Sister" and "Puppet On A String" would have been in the mix. Nevertheless, this is still a fine representation of the music of one of the greatest recording artists and entertainers of all-time.

As an added bonus "I Am An Elvis Fan" includes a superb 12 page booklet with informative liner notes and career-spanning photos. There is little doubt that some hardcore Elvis fans might find this package to be redundant and the whole promotion a bit silly. I do understand. But for casual fans who tossed out their 45's years ago or for the younger listener looking to sample this music "I Am An Elvis Fan" would be a great choice. The price is right and this would be the perfect disc to enjoy in your car, your workshop or for that matter just about anywhere. Rest assured that these are all the original RCA hit singles that you would remember from the radio. The "I Am An Elvis Fan" promotion commemorates the 35th anniversary of the passing of the "King". This disc reminds us once again of just how talented and versatile a performer he was. Very highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Count me in... I am a Big True Fan as well... August 4, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I know, there are a bunch of Elvis' Compilations out there. Pretty much, in every compilation made and being sold by Amazon, you will most likely see that at least one reviewer has pointed this well known fact out. The cow has been milked quite well! We know, capitalism at its best! Thirty-five years after "Elvis has left the building" he continues to create jobs and helps to move forward the economy; amazing!

However, what's special about this compilation that it's a SAMPLER not only of all the music genres that Elvis mastered, but also of how Elvis' career and personal style evolved with time. Also, how he managed to reinvent himself again and again. There are 19 Studio Tracks & two Live Tracks.

This SAMPLER is most strongly recommended for the curious person who wants to know what's the big deal with Elvis and why he earned the nickname "THE KING".

For the true fan, there is the EXPENSIVE ($769.00 US) 30 CD's Masters by SONY/LEGACY, but that' a different review.

We can all make better choices than these ;-)
Really, though. I can't believe that, given the choice, people would pick the same old songs that we always hear. Though it must be said, I participated in this poll and if I remember right, you couldn't just pick any song; there was a pre-selected pool from which you could pick. Great... Read more
