I'm a big Maru fan, so I was excited when the English version of the first Maru book came out. It's not a bad book, but three distinct things disappointed me about it:
1) It's small. For some reason I was expecting something a little bigger, like maybe a coffee table book. This is like a handbook.
2) LOTS of repeat content from the popular web clips. I was expecting more original photographs.
3) Not a big surprise that there is repeat content from the web clips, but the content that is repeated, as well as most of the pictures in the book, appear grainy and from a lower resolution source than a normal book you'd find in a bookstore - makes the book seem cheap.
In its defense, it wasn't overpriced and I feel like I got what I paid. I would recommend it only to dedicated Maru fans, who will delight at anything that has to do with this cat. Those that are on the fence or aren't that familiar with him should avoid.

Purchasing this book is the best way to thank mugumogu for sharing The Wonderful Maru with the world, for free on the interwebz. If you're a Maru fan and your budget will allow it, please buy a copy. I love mine for the young-Maru photos and the floor plan of his house.

This book is a genuine treasure. She is a brilliant photographer. Maru was already a star. Cats are notoriously uncooperative when it comes to having their pictures taken so to get this many perfect shots there has to be a lot of bad ones. I have looked at it many time so far & will look at it many times more. Most definitely worth the price.

I couldn't be happier with this book unless a Maru clone came with it. The book is 94 pages and approximately 7.5 inches by 8 inches. There are many cute captions to go along with the high quality photos. The bonus poster was a nice surprise. Thanks mugumogu, please keep the books, pictures, and videos coming.

This book was fantastic. My fiance and I love Maru and were eagerly anticipating the arrival of this book. It did not disappoint. There are so many wonderful pictures of Maru. I also enjoyed that the owner took the time to give us some more insight to Maru's personality. If you enjoy watching Maru videos, you'll look this book!

i saw cute videos of him on ichc.com. this book has lots of great pictures and captions and back stories for the videos and funny comments by his owner. if you haven't been reading the blog, which i didn't, then this has lots of new stuff to read/learn about maru, his adoption, kitten pictures, and house floor plan which was a nice touch. i recommend it!

As a cat lover (and a heavy Internet user), I think I've watched every Maru YouTube video out there. I love his "catitude", and rarely do I fail to laugh or smile when watching his fascination with boxes. I got a copy of I Am Maru by mugumogu from the library when I was last over there, wondering if the online life of Maru would translate well to print. Unfortunately, I was underwhelmed...
For Maru fans, the book is interesting. It adds some background in terms of birth date, the kitten years, habits, the meaning of his name, and so forth. And yes, many of the pictures are cute. Gotta love that round mound of fluff...
But beyond that, there's not a lot of substance. A number of the pictures are minor variations on each other, as well as being on the smallish side. Including screen images of the different videos is somewhat strange, as you can't click on anything and the URLs to find the videos on YouTube are not included. The back-and-forth "banter" between Maru and his owner is sort of cute, but again it's rather light in substance. Add in a fair amount of white space as well as the text being in both English and Japanese, and this book ends up being something you'll breeze through in about 15 minutes.
Maru fans will like this book and appreciate the additional background info. Others who don't know the Maru story will wonder what the commotion is about (until they go online and see the videos). I would have been very disappointed had I paid full price for this book, but given that I got it at the library, I'm willing to say it was "OK."
