"Worship" music today encompasses a lot of pop-oriented stuff that doesn't seem to have much power behind it (exceptions being the "Worship Together" and "Revival Generation" recordings). But if you really want to hear how honest, brutal, and beautiful a genuine and moving worship experience can be, you need to find The Violet Burning. Greatest worship album ever recorded: "Strength," Violet Burning (good luck finding it!). Second greatest: "Faith and Devotions of a Satellite Heart," also by VB. Worthy addition to this list: "I Am a Stranger In This Place." The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because of the comparison with the other two recordings mentioned; for example, "Song of the Harlot" on this CD is stunning, but would have been even more powerful had I not already heard the first version of the same song on "Strength." This is one of those songs you can never hear without weeping before God; in fact, "I Am a Stranger In This Place" is pretty much filled with those songs. If you think Christian worship music has been drifting toward the bland and saccharine, you should check out The Violet Burning.

This cd is not only entertaining but it is filled with the spirit. You can feel God's presence and the love these people have for God through the sound and the music....It's one of my favorites!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent cd, July 18, 2002
This review is from: I Am a Stranger in This Place (Audio CD)
If you are unfamiliar with The Violet Burning, you're missing out on a great band. I recently purchased their newest worship cd ("Faith and Devotions of a Sattelite Heart") and was blown away by the whole cd! It's one of those you just have to listen to from beginning to end without interruption because there's no where to truly stop! Grab that one! Now on to this cd. This is sort of a "best of" collection of some of their past cds. Again, the ambient kind of sound (or "vibe" for lack of a better term) is great on here. Songs like "Low" and "Gorgeous" have some incredible music moments, and the vocals throughout are great with just the perfect amount and timing of female background singing that accents everything. I really don't think you'd be disappointed with this cd if you like Christian alternative bands like "The Choir" or other bands like the old REM stuff. Grab this one for an intro to the band, and then get "Faith and Devotions..." as a follow up to truly hear what a worship cd can be.
