Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Yes, this is yet another picture-book confirmation of a child’s self-worth, but it’s not without its own rough-around-the-edges charm. A parent’s voice supplies the rhyming, first-person voice: “You came into our family / with a big, BIG job to do, / the one of growing up into / the one and only you!” From birth to monsters to playing baseball, whether roller-coaster days are easy or tough, there is always reassurance from the unseen narrator. Keywords and key phrases are printed in different colors to drive home the self-esteem messages, adding to the colorful hodgepodge design. The breezy, bright watercolors, meanwhile, are spontaneous looking and childlike, with a minimum of brushstrokes used to suggest the backdrops behind the smiley-face characters. Though message driven and purposeful, this declaration of unconditional love might just provide a caregiver with the right words to express his or her confidence in a child who is not feeling up to the latest task. Grades K-2. --Julie Cummins

Review

While the vignettes in Richmond's latest inspirational picture book are intended for the elementary school set (her characters grapple with not getting picked for a team, being scared of monsters in the closet, and jumping off the diving board), what human, of any age, couldn't use this kind of cheering up: "When your project seems too hard,/ and you want to go to bed,/ I believe in your smart thinking/ to learn and grow instead." (Publishers Weekly ) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

More About the Author

Marianne Richmond -- writer, artist and inspirationalist -- has touched the lives of millions over the past decade through her award-winning books that put feelings into words and help you connect with the people + moments that matter.

For two decades, Marianne ran her own publishing company, winding down in 2010 to make way for a partnership with Sourcebooks, Inc., one of the leading and largest independent publishers in North America. Since then, she has s traveled the country, reading to and speaking with thousands of children about finding their own voice through the written word. Says Richmond, "I share my story of growing up with seizures and encourage kids and grownups to celebrate their individuality." Though Publisher's Weekly calls her "an author on the rise," Richmond's favorite letter is from an elementary school teacher who said, "I feel like a better me after reading your books."

Marianne lives in Minneapolis, MN with her husband, four kids, and their beloved Border Collie, Otis. Favorite things include coffee, hiking, reading memoirs, digital scrapbooking, sleeping, watching sappy movies, going on vacation, hanging out with girlfriends, eating ice cream after the kids are sleeping, and simply creating something from nothing.

It's rare to find such a wonderful book that can be used with adopted children and foster children. Most refer to the reader as son/daughter and from a mother/father. This one is PERFECT! We recently sent this book back home with our 9yr old foster son. He was grinning from ear to ear as I read it, with bittersweet tears rolling down his cheeks. It was EXACTLY what he needed to hear. I plan to buy several more to have on hand. ;)

I don't like sappy books, but this one does all the sweetness in a direct simple way. It's easy to read with sincerity and it clearly makes my daughter feel pretty great.

I bought this for several of my grandchildren for Christmas. I loved that it emphasized inner qualities that the child has some control over. Their comments were very positive, as well.

This book came as expected. It is very cute. I am an avid book lover and bought it as part of a graduation gift for my son. It is very sentimental and my son actually loved it. He actually has it next to his TV on his shelf. It's a great read for younger kids. I only wish I had found it years ago. I have many people about this book. Very Cute.
