A Haunting Vocalist,

This is Joe Cocker's best album. He brings a raw beauty to these songs of love and loss.

COCKER'S BEST,
By Greg J. Sandie (Lakewood, California United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: I Can Stand a Little Rain (Audio CD)
This CD sold like hotcakes when it was first introduced on vinyl in the early 1970's. YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL, of course, being a hit single; but it's GUILTY, the Randy Newman-written song, that steals the entire CD. This song alone is worth the price. Sad to see it is discontinued in this country. It was sold-out for years in the 1970's.

One of the best,
By Cinpat "Cincinnati Patti" (Cincinnati, Ohio) - See all my reviews

This is by far one of the best albums ever - every cut, arrangement, and Joe's soulful voice are in top form. I had to buy the CD to replace the LP in my Joe Cocker collection. Love, love, love this CD.

Joe Cocker does not get as much great press as he should. His singing is powerful and not just from the heart, not just from his guts, but from every pore of his body. This CD has his 1975 hit, "You Are so Beautiful." Listen to this CD and "You Are So Beautiful" with joy that there is such a voice.

I had this as an 8 track tape when if first came out. The cd version is excellent. No loud track change between songs like all 8 tracks. Fond memories of first hearing it.

Cocker never dates. There have been few artists to match his voice and style.
I started out with "Cocker Happy" and have never failed to enjoy his lyrics and music through the years. This album is typical of his earlier days but put this, and his other albums together and you have hours of pleasure. THAT IS WHAT MUSIC IS ALL ABOUT!

Impassioned interpretations a specialty...,

Get past the comparatively lightweight poppy first track...get into the impassioned title track, the classic Jimmy Webb songs "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress" and "It's A Sin", Allen Toussaint's "Performance" and Randy newman's "Guilty". All passionate soul-tearing performances.
Then there's that last cracked notes at the end of "You Are So Beautiful"...can you imagine that getting through on a song these days without being airbrushed and auto-tuned out? Roger Daltrey (The Who) once said something like he'd prefer to hit a note with emotion than a perfect note any day- this is a perfect example! |
