4.0 out of 5 stars Snow takes some classic songs and makes them her own
I was real impressed with this album. Phoebe snow has always had a remarkable voice, but usually had a very uneven choice of songs. In this album, Phoebe goes in for some classics from the late 1960's and early 1970's. To my mind, the ploy works. I recall listening to "Piece of My Heart", knowing I knew the song, but being unable to place it. When it finally hit...

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but lacking in any focus
Snow's new CD is entertaining, but lacking in any musical perspective. What she tends to do is to take a song and to slow it down so that the listener loses the melody. Also, she has developed a habit of inserting high notes or squealing yelps into a song, apparently to show her emotion. The 2 big remakes, Rocking Pneumonia and Joplin's Take a Piece of My Heart, are...

4.0 out of 5 stars Snow takes some classic songs and makes them her own, May 1, 1998
This review is from: I Can't Complain (Audio CD)
I was real impressed with this album. Phoebe snow has always had a remarkable voice, but usually had a very uneven choice of songs. In this album, Phoebe goes in for some classics from the late 1960's and early 1970's. To my mind, the ploy works. I recall listening to "Piece of My Heart", knowing I knew the song, but being unable to place it. When it finally hit me that it was a remake of an old Janis Joplin song it floored me, much as Snow's rendition of "If I Only had a Brain/a Heart/the Nerve" from the Wizard of Oz a few years ago had. When she applies her skills to a song, she makes you hear it anew. and these are songs that benefit from the treatment. Her version of Van Morrison's "Madame George" from his seminal Astral Weeks album bring the words into focus, and enliven the vivid reminiscences Morrison embedded within the song.

She similarly enlivens both Dylan's "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry" and the old Blind Willie Johnson Blues "Lord, I Can't Keep from Crying" with fresh, sturdy interpretations that allow the listener to appreciate the songs anew.

Give it a try.

Her singing of Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart" is so moving that I would buy the CD for that song alone!

I wished this CD were all Blues but it is great anyway. Baby Work Out has you workin' out & Rockin' Pneumonia is the best. This CD can make the hair stand up on the back of your head if ya know what I mean. I play it all the time on Blue Wave Radio KECG 88.1 / 97.7 Sat 7 to 9 am & Single's Cafe Sun 5 to 6 pm in the East Bay CA. G Hanes Where It's Red Hot & Resophonic Blue.

Snow's new CD is entertaining, but lacking in any musical perspective. What she tends to do is to take a song and to slow it down so that the listener loses the melody. Also, she has developed a habit of inserting high notes or squealing yelps into a song, apparently to show her emotion. The 2 big remakes, Rocking Pneumonia and Joplin's Take a Piece of My Heart, are perhaps the most engaging songs on the CD. Unfortunately, Snow sounds as if she is merely walking through the tracks, and these fun songs just don't sound like much fun.
