5.0 out of 5 stars The CD That Put Karrin Allyson On the Recording Map, September 3, 2000
By
Dean Hampton "Dean" (Kansas City, Missouri USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: I Didn't Know About You (Audio CD)
I Didn't Know About You is a very special CD that I listen to frequently. Self-produced by Karrin (& guitarist Danny Embery) this is the CD that found it's way to Concord Records' founder, Carl Jefferson and resulted in a five-CD recording contract for her. Loaded with great jazz standards wrapped around bits and pieces of blues (Pack Your Suitcase Blues), pop tunes (Jesse & Guilty) and a touch of classical/Latin (How Insensitive), she covers it all.

Karrin introduces her all-star Kansas City jazz musicians who have played with her on almost all later recordings plus a few KC jazz giants who choose to stay home and do the local scene. On piano (in addition to Paul Smith) check out Joe Cartwright on `S Wonderful. Then Russ Long on his touching ballad, "Save That Time." Add to this hot list Mike Metheny on flugelhorn, Gary Sivils on cornet, and Gerald Spaits on bass.

On this CD, Karrin proved herself to be a great jazz vocalist, a leader and producer who can put it all together and a soulful lady who can climb right into the heart of your emotions. Since it's now about seven years old, you'd better hurry. Get it before it's out of print. (9/2000)

Karrin Allyson's voice is like butter on the tongue.. so rich and warm and voluptuous. She makes a song you've known all your life sound new and fresh, and dedicated to YOU. Listen to a couple of tracks... but go get your credit card first :)

Did you know Antonio Carlos Jobim composed "How Insensitive" based on Chopin's Prelude Opus 28? Ms. Allyson got it and performed one the best vocal renditions ever. Great!

Karrin Allyson:
Is someone you just have to hear if you like nice smooth jazz with allot of
wonderful Vocals of course but she can sing so many different tunes in so many scales you just will find the time spent so worthwhile.
She is a keeper.

If you have not heard her before, this is just one of many great albums she has done.
This one is a fine one like most are to start with. But check her out, You can buy any of her Albums and never be sorry..

When you crank the CD cover open get ready to smile and hear a wonderful range of fine Jazz female vocals that will be coming at you......
She is fun.........to just sit back and listen to. Kick your shoes off and get ready to be entertained in your home.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Consumate Jazz Singer, December 25, 2007
This review is from: I Didn't Know About You (Audio CD)
If ever you thought that with the pasing of such greats as Ella and Sarah the art would be lost with them, you can rest easy. Karrin Allyson can do it all. My personal favourite tracks are "Stompin at the Savoy" and "Pack Your Suitcase Blues" but then I like it to "swing" and these tracks sure do that. That said I enjoyed every track on this CD. The song selection is great! And don't forget the "musos". Karrin has great backing from them which makes it all work.

both heart-rending and footstomping. i played this album on my 2-hour jazz radio show last week and got great comments. Check out "Nature Boy" especially (in my opinion, the best since Nat King Cole).
