As marvelous as the song is, to understand the significance of "I Dream a Dream," I think you have to have seen a live stage production or the movie version of Les Misérables. The song is a mournful lament, sung by the anguished and impoverished Fantine, who reminisces about happier times and wonders at all that has gone wrong in her life. It's a beautiful song that wrings a lot of emotion from the listener. (My wife and I saw the movie a few days ago, and there were a lot of hankies coming out before the song was over.)

By the way, the song that Anne Hathaway sings in the trailer for Les Misérables is not the same version that she sings in the movie. The trailer version sounds more like a concert performance taken out of context from the story, and it's only about 1:20 long. The movie version is 4:38 and really delivers the full power and pathos of the song.

Anne Hathaway's lovely, fragile sounding voice is wonderful. I believe this is the most beautiful version of this song I've heard.

I can't wait to see this film because the soundtrack is beautiful and the star quality of the cast is perfection. This particular song is my favorite from Les Miserables.

She brings both me - and my daughter - to tears with her rendition. Such a talent - a double threat.

Don't make the mistake that Adam Lambert (former American Idol contestant) made by thinking that this is going to sound like a recording studio track. This is the raw and real recording of Anne Hathaway from the new movie interpretation of Les MIserables. The movie itself is powerful and left a real Les MIz fan (me) touched and overwhelmed! This song is very representative of what the movie portrays!

Anne Hathaway brings a beautiful voice and a lot of emotion into this powerful song. Possibly the best song in the musical and quite moving.
