5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling read, October 10, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: I, Dreyfus (Hardcover)
This is a gripping novel highlighting deep-rooted prejudices and social charcteristics which many prefer to keep buried, if we admit their existence at all. The predicament which surrounds the central character mirrors and draws upon a historical case but the plot is modern and original.

The story unfolds in a refreshing blend of forms - letters, journal accounts and third person narrative and the characters are realistic to the point that it's possible to forget you're reading a fictional account.

This is an exploration of what it means to be Jewish in the present day and the consequences of biases which lie unspoken. As a non-Jewish reader, I found it a remarkable and stimulating tale, a protest, a lament, an accusation, a defence, an elegy, a vindication.

I couldn't stop turning the pages to find out what could possibly happen next - definitely one to read in a single sitting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable, January 16, 2011
This review is from: I Dreyfuss (Paperback)
Bernice writes with a compelling style...the characters come alive...and you find yourself transported to their world. A must read. I have read this over & over again. Each time, I am struck by the poignant manner in which Bernice has captured the protagonist's search for identity!
