Editorial Reviews

June 2010 feature in the Village Voice, which describes Bleckmann as the most startlingly original male vocalist since Bobby McFerrin. Bleckmann s adventurous and extravagantly beautiful choices have led his work to be described as from another planet (New York Times), magical (AllAboutJazz), and transcendent (Village Voice). Inspired by the Arte Povera, the 60s Italian art movement that created installations with the simplest and poorest materials, Bleckmann creates with humble means and the devotion of a prayer. Besides his voice and a myriad of acoustics, Bleckmann has chosen some unlikely companions for his solos: music boxes, megaphones, autoharp, glasses, water, shruti, and various toys.

Most Helpful Customer Reviews

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful By Roosevelt B. on September 27, 2010
Format: Audio CD
Instead of a gimmicky catalogue of special effects and crazy vocal sounds, this acoustic solo CD by Theo Bleckmann is a deep and engaging journey through song and sound, beautifully recorded in natural reverb (in a monastery in Switzerland). Bleckmann's singing and the overall sound of this production are haunting and to the point. The choice of material maturely underlines his status as one of the most creative and moving vocal artists around. Bleckmann uses toys and hand held instruments to underscore his playfulness and whimsy but they never seem to be overshadowing the voice or taking over the arrangements. INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL!!!
