5.0 out of 5 stars The Bobby Fuller Four Live On, March 27, 2001

This review is from: I Fought the Law: Best Of (Audio CD)
The sound of West Texas in the '50's and '60's was a chapter in the history of rock and roll whose mark is indelible. The magic of the time, the geography, and the culture will never again be duplicated. Like the Caribbean breeds hurricanes, West Texas bred rock and roll. The first storm was Buddy Holly and the Crickets and the last was the Bobby Fuller Four (BF4).

The "boomers" remeber BF4 for their big hit, "I Fought The Law" that topped in 1966. Not long after, Bobby was tragically killed. The remaining three tried to carry on, but FOUR was the charm. They left an undiscovered trove of unreleased or locally released treasure for all of us to savor today.

BF4 recorded extensively by themselves and with Del-Fi. This Del-Fi album contains a nice fat chunk of their best studio recordings at Del-Fi. At least ten of these had national potential had fate not intervened. The music is not a remembrance or a memorial however - far from it. It is a celebration. You'll be singing and thumping, and dancing around the house no matter what kind of rock you like. The music here will make you happy and feel alive - exactly what rock and roll does best.

BF4 music drips with an electric sound tempered by full Fender chords, trashy leads, superb quavering vocals by Bobby with outstanding backup from the group, and is a unique and unforgettable rock sound - totally theirs. Music and lyrics are by Bobby and others and nearly every cut is original and unique.

Most "best of" albums are an "end" or a reflection. Not this one - it is a whole world of discovery for many. You'll want more BF4 and there is more out there - quite a lot. This album is like a big box of chocolates with several layers. After a taste or two, you'll be digging for more.

If you know about and like BF4 already, get yourself a copy of this CD to savor your favorites. Better - get a copy for a friend and they'll soon be just like you. No matter, anyone who listens will see why BF4 keeps making more and more people happy. Let Her Dance!

4.0 out of 5 stars Missing a few essentials, July 31, 2002

A "Best Of Bobby Fuller" collection that includes "Phantom Dragster" but leaves off "Never To Be Forgotten" is a little suspect, but the real selling point here is the original mono single mixes, including the rare early version of "Take My Word". Buy it for that reason, but you'll need much more to get the full picture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific, June 20, 2005
This review is from: I Fought the Law: Best Of (Audio CD)
For confirmed Fullerites, this cd is a must since it contains different versions and mixes of some of Fuller's best music. The collection has many different Lp and 45 rpm mixes that are a treat to hear from the more common versions. Get this Del Fi cd.
