As a parent and a physics teacher, I look for books about science that my children will enjoy. In I, Galileo Ms. Christensen tells the story of Galileo's life. It is written from the point of view of an aged Galileo looking back over his life as he lives out his days under house arrest for heresy. Though my children are a little young for the book and struggled a bit with the text, it has a lot going for it.
First of all, the illustrations in this book are wonderful. They are not only beautiful to look at but they also have a style that has the right feel for a 16th/17th century Italian Renaissance story. In addition, the bulk of the story is told well, with a nice focus on the basics of Galileo's work and artistic reproductions of Galileo's own drawings. Of course, the church controversy is an important part of Galileo's story, but the use of it as a framing device brings is a prominence that may be too much for some children, as it's not something that is easily understood from this text.
In any case, this book is an excellent biography of Galileo for readers 7 to 8 years old and up. There's also a nice chronology, glossary and summary of Galileo's achievements at the end. For parents wanting to get their kids interested in science, this is a good choice.

I read this book to my eight year-old boy and my nine-year-old and eleven-year-old girls. They were captivated. The story of Galileo is compelling in itself but this book is graced with gorgeous illustrations that made every page a feast for the eyes. I paid full price for this book rather than waiting to buy a used copy at a discounted price because I wanted it immediately and because I wanted an immaculate copy. This book is worth it.

As you might suspect, I, GALILEO is the story of the well-known early scientist born in the 16th century, Galileo Galilei, as told from his point of view. He relates his story while being held prisoner in Arcetri during the last years of his life.
As an only child, Galileo's parents doted on him and encouraged his innate curiosity. His father taught him music and mathematics, as well as how the two are interrelated. He also told him, "A person must be allowed to ask questions and seek answers in search of truth." Galileo took this maxim to heart his entire life.
Although Galileo was a university dropout (from the University of Pisa), he wasn't anywhere close to being a failure. He taught mathematics at that same university some time after quitting his studies there. Later he lost his professorship after disproving Aristotle's claim that a heavy object will fall faster than a light one. He dropped two cannonballs, one lighter than the other, from the Tower of Pisa. Even though he had proved his point (they both hit the ground at the same time), the public, especially the folks at the University, were not pleased to discover that their beloved Aristotle was wrong. Consequently, Galileo was not invited back to the University to teach.
A determined Galileo went on to invent the compass, telescope and microscope, and also discovered that Copernicus' theory that the sun revolved around the earth was incorrect, as, in fact, the earth revolved around the sun. Even though few believed him, and the Catholic Church denounced his theory as heresy, Galileo refused to change his theory or his mind. This, of course, is what led to his imprisonment.
Bonnie Christensen does a very good job of telling Galileo's story, making it understandable and accessible for children.Read more ›

Perfect book to introduce a toddler to the wonderful world of historic figures and scientists of all times! We started with Hypatia and many others. This is certainly a super nice addition to our educational collection.

This picture book biography is suitable for grades three and up. Galileo, himself, tells the story of his life; the content is full yet concise. Nowadays, we take Galileo's inventions and discoveries for granted, along with scientific thought that sprang from this new knowledge, these new ways of viewing the world and beyond. Christensen's expertise in crafting this story is unsurpassed. Upon reading this, readers will have new insight and empathy to the man, Galileo. Christensen's artwork is dreamy and explanative, and also contains replicas of Galileo's drawings. End listings include Chronology, Experiments, Inventions and Improvements, Astronomic Discoveries, Glossary, Websites and more. Definitely a book for a parent to read to a younger, knowledge-yearning child aged 5 to 7.
