Nominated for a Grammy for Blues Album of the year, Robert is definitely deserving, especially when one considers the competition. Though this album lags on a few cuts, it is still excellent overall. If you want a real treat though, see Lockwood in concert!

By the way, if you like Robert, try Wallace Coleman's album. Wallace plays on Lockwood's album, but truly shines in his solo debut.

Oh, and as for B.B. King's guest shot on Lockwood's album.....it was recorded at a separate studio and dubbed.

Robert Jr. Lockwood and his All-Stars are the house band Wednesday nights at Fat Fish Blue in Cleveland. It's amazing sight to see and hear this 90 year old bluesman, dressed to the nines, pick up his blue electric twelve string and start jamming with a really hot, tight horn band backing him up. Some of his sidemen are in their sixties and seventies- one night Robert "Red Top" Young, the keyboardist, showed me his cardiac bypass scar. Their age doesn't stop them from cooking up hot blues. This CD is my favorite Lockwood recording. It has pretty much their complete Wednesday night playlist. If you can't get to Cleveland on a Wednesday to hear them live, or can't make it to one of their road gigs, this CD is the next best thing. Following is a Feb 2010 Edit. RJL, sadly, has died. Before he did, though, I managed to ask him, "Mr. Lockwood, I heard you taught some licks to B.B. King, is that true?" He replied, "I didn't teach no licks to no B.B. King. I plain TAUGHT HIM!" I guess that about clears things up. Still a great album and the only way to hear Lockwood short of going to heaven yourself.

Lockwood is a living legend, yet not enough people know his name. I've read that Robert Jr. Lockwood taught B.B. King guitar lessons early on. It pleases me that years later, now that King is a name that almost anyone would recognize, he honors his friend & mentor by playing on this album. "I Got to Find Me a Woman" was Lockwood's first big release in 16 years, but even at the age of 83 he delivers an album with fresh clarity and expert playing.
