4.0 out of 5 stars Camden Classis - Ahhh, The Memories!
Elvis fans who grew up in the age of the vinyl LP will no doubt have fond memories of the Camden budget LP's. For many of us, during our younger days, these LP's were very affordable when the only income you had coming in was an allowance from your parents or from summer jobs mowing lawns, or winters shoveling snow....Those carefree days of childhood!

There are a few good songs on this collection, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to the casual listener. Its more for the hardcore Elvis fan who just cant get enough Elvis. 4.0 out of 5 stars Camden Classis - Ahhh, The Memories!, November 29, 2008
This review is from: I Got Lucky (Audio CD)
Elvis fans who grew up in the age of the vinyl LP will no doubt have fond memories of the Camden budget LP's. For many of us, during our younger days, these LP's were very affordable when the only income you had coming in was an allowance from your parents or from summer jobs mowing lawns, or winters shoveling snow....Those carefree days of childhood!

"I Got Lucky" is the latest release in a string of remastered CD re-releases of these quasi-classics. While typically devoid of any radio hits, they offered fans access to some of Elvis's music that wasn't readily available at the time the original LP's were released. The cover art reflected what you might expect from a 70's era budget release, however, "I Got Lucky" stands out in that it shows a slim, trim picture of Elvis in concert from 1970 in a plain white suit, long before the caricature of self parody would take root.

That there are no radio hits to be found on this release doesn't mean there aren't great songs within! The title track, taken from the soundtrack to Elvis' "Kid Galahad" movie is an infectious early 60's pop tune that you can't help but love. The hidden gem that is Elvis' cover of the Leiber & Stoller penned "Fools Fall In Love" belongs on everyone's list of favorite Elvis songs......Another feel-good song, featuring great sax work from the late, great Boot Randolph.

These releases are pure nostalgia....One hundred percent fun, nothing more, nothing less. The songs have been remastered by Vic Anesini, who has earned a great deal of praise for the remastering work he's done on Elvis' catalog.....Praise rightly deserved as listenign to these songs will attest, they've never sounded better!

So, pick-up an Elvis Camden CD, slip it on the CD player, close your eyes and spend some time reliving the good old days!

4.0 out of 5 stars Some terrific songs and sonics!, July 22, 2011

Looka here, this album is good- just take away 1-2 "fillers" and you have some of Presley's most outstanding vocals in a cool package (even has decent cover art - Elvis in Soulful stage stance). WHAT A WONDERFUL LIFE is a vastly under-appreciated song from a strong comedy he did in 1961; IF YOU THINK I DON'T NEED YOU, an exceptional uptempo co-written by pal and songwriter Red West; I GOT LUCKY [maybe a tad too laid back but to this Reviewer a possible model for James Brown's I FEEL GOOD (I GOT YOU)].

Ballads are also above board: HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS from another good early '60s Elvis flick; and, I NEED SOMEBODY TO LEAN ON, is surely one Elvis best movie songs and best production numbers. He excelled at the moody, introspective ballad.

FOOLS FALL IN LOVE is El's version of the Drifters' great 1950's mid-hit; not his best effort but a fine, classy choice.

There are a few good songs on this collection, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to the casual listener. Its more for the hardcore Elvis fan who just cant get enough Elvis. Actually, its not a terrible compilation really, except for "Yoga Is As Yoga Does" (from the movie "Easy Come, Easy Go"), which is probably one of the worst songs ever recorded by anybody in the history of sound reproduction. I'm sure Elvis would never have a recorded a song like that if he were not obligated to do so. I could think of a million better songs that could have taken it's place here (in which case I might have given it 4 stars!).

All in all this compilation is not representative of Elvis' best work, but its something the die-hard fans will want to have.

i've been here(Amazon) a few times over the years looking for this one. i gave it 5 stars mostly for nostalgia sake as it was the 1st Elvis album i ever bought(i was about 9 or 10 at the time). though it isn't "chock full O hits," i still enjoy all the songs with fond memories & it's one i'll purchase now that i don't have to pay in blood to a private party for a worn out copy; i can't wait to receive this.

I remember my dad buying this record in the budget bin in 1982 or so. I was in the store with him and saw it and pointed it out. I was 7ish.
I must have put that record on a thousand times, it was fun and seemed to showcase Elvis's versatility, especially in movie songs. That said, "Yoga is as yoga does" is by no means a masterpiece but the record in general has some fantastic music. "I got lucky" "Home is where the heart is" "I need somebody to lean on" is amazing as is "Stop, your wrong again". The whole cd sounds great and is a great selection of movie songs in general.

Here again we have a great release. As I stated I really enjoy these Camden releases. I think there just awesome. I still have the LP I bought in Jr. High. Like I said when I bought this many songs I've never heard before. The sound tracks they were from were deleted. I would buy this LP if you love Elvis. You can read my reveiw on Elvis sings hits from his movies Vol. 1. This review stands for all the Camden reases. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vast improvement over the vinyl, October 29, 2010
This review is from: I Got Lucky (Audio CD)
While it is true there are no "hits" here, there is one fact worth pointing out: While the original LP was mono, this CD is (mostly) true stereo, the exception being "What a Wonderful Life".

I get happy everytime I put this record on. From the seventies on till now. I played it often on my turntable. And now I can play it with no scratch on it on my Cd player. Great stuff, this Cd invention. As I was a kid with no money. These camden releases were the only way to get to hear Elvis in your room. This is my favourite Camden. Only happy music on this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lesser Elvis Album of Movie Songs, September 26, 2011
This review is from: I Got Lucky (Audio CD)
When I was growing up a big Elvis fan and owned dozens of his albums, I GOT LUCKY was my LEAST favorite. There are a few decent songs on here, like "I Need Somebody to Lean On" from "Viva Las Vegas," but overall it's a very weak collection. Several of the songs, including "I Got Lucky" and "Riding the Rainbow" were mediocre songs that tarnished his otherwise pretty good film "Kid Galahad." And "The Love Machine" and "Yoga is as Yoga Does" from his movie "Easy Come, Easy Go" are probably the WORST songs that Elvis recorded in his entire career!! I don't doubt the story that "Colonel" Parker had someone write "Yoga is as Yoga Does" as an insult to Elvis's interest in eastern religions, and supposedly Elvis was angry about the song but recorded it anyway. Another problem is that there are just 10 songs on here, but at least the price is very low. The cool cover photo of Elvis on stage is the best thing about this album. I mean, come on, if you want to get some of Elvis's best movie songs try the CDs King Creole (1958 Film), Jailhouse Rock & Love Me Tender, Loving You, Blue Hawaii, Viva Las Vegas [Soundtrack], and a pretty good 2-CD set of some of the best of Elvis's movie songs is Elvis at the Movies (Dig).
