Long awaited classic,
By A Customer
This review is from: I Got Next (Audio CD)
This album is easily one of the best albums to come out in the last decade. From the opening "shots" to the closing "dunks" KRS flips rhymes and blends beats like only a master could. His experimentation with metal and his association with rap's leech (Puff Daddy) are the only blights on what would otherwise be an instant classic. If you like true hip-hop, both music and culture, then this album is one that you must have in your collection.

KRS makes Puffy sound good!,

This is one of the innovative hip-hop records that KRS has produced. For those wondering what true hip-hop is, pick this up. I was very disappointed that KRS did a track with hip-hop's leech, Puff Daddy. But even that track is fresh. This album is worth your money. Listen and get lost in KRS' words. Yo Kris! Please don't do any more tracks with Puff! Please!

Weakest of KRS-ONE's efforts, saved by "A Friend",

I would never diss a KRS record, but this one was just a typical superstar-experimentation CD that we've all heard our favorite artists do. Track 17, "Just to Prove a Point" is EMBARRASSING! That's not KRS-ONE, and that's not hip-hop. However, Track 7, "A Friend", features the illest production on the album. I don't know what the spotlight reviewer said about it being weakly produced. It's probably one of the best tracks I've ever heard dropped by the Blastmaster. If you want this album, purchase it for that track and enjoy the rest.

KRS-One is hands down the greatest MC of all time. He has old-school cred and is still holding it down. That said, this album is great. It didn't sound good at first listen but it has really grown on me.Pros: The tracks The MC, Step Into a World, and A friend are killer. Heartbeat is my favorite track and Angie and Redman have great pieces on it. Cons: Unsteller beats and some "filler" drag this album down. But by being such a great MC, KRS-One's rhymes can overcome poor beats.

I was really suprised when I heard this CD. This CD shows what the Real Hip Hop is about. It's a shame radio stations do not play KRS-ONE music alot since there are some great tracks such as The MC, Step into a world, a friend, and can't stop wont't stop. You can obviously tell this album took sometime to put together and wasn't just thrown together to make a album. People like Nelly and Fabolous sell records basically off of catchy beats but have nothing to offer lyrically. I don't fault people for buying those sub-par albums but they are just uneducated about what Real Hip Hop is all about. I hope KRS-ONE next album is as good as this one.

Krs has never been the type to follow trends or fads, he just continue to bring us that classic hip-hop. I Got Next is another lp where Kris gives us a variety of lyrical styles like the title "Over Ya Head". This track is a jazz fusion of horns with a gritty drum beat underneath. The free throws and commentaries were a good touch to the album as well, despite other artists using horrible interludes between their music. The repitious use of the phrase "...who am I? The emcee..." on the first song or track 3 "The MC" flowed well over the Domingo produced east coast type beat. "Just To Prove A Point" is a live rock song that quiets during the hook and seem to fit in the equation Krs-One calculated. On the sleeves it has 18 tracks listed, but there are actually 19 with "Step Into A World (Rapture's Delight) (Remix)" featuring P. Diddy and turned out to be a good club/party song. "Real Hip-Hop- Part II" could have been done without Mic Vandalz and "Heartbeat" could have been left completely out. I Got Next is not quite the classic to get a five star rating, but Krs got a lot to offer on this One.

Krs One didn't get noticed,
By Hadi Jones "The Tree" (San Antonio, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: I Got Next (Audio CD)
This was the best hip hop album i've ever heard and what makes me mad is that the legendary Krs didn't get noticed because of his looks, but his lyrical talent is what should be noticed bacause by far he remains the greatest lyrical rapper ever, and some other great lyrical rappers who don't get noticed that much like Keith Murray, Mos Def, Skee Lo and Dead Prez should because they are the revolutions of hip hop, and if the game is interested in looks more than talent, then hip hop is dead. But nontheless, this is the man that inspired many known rappers today, including LL Cool J, Jay Z, Nas, Twista, Public Enemy etc and in my point of view is the greatest rapper alive. So if you like hip hop, Krs One, fresh tracks and collaberations, this album has it all, the legendary Krs One will forever remain the greatest lyrical rapper in the world, no one can reach his level.

this c.d. is off the hook. krs one at his finest, though a different sound than his older hits, this experiment of different sounds and styles is sure to blow the minds of the unkowing. with knowledge droppin freestyle tracks like fourthquarta freethrows, where krs exposes the truth of religion with an astrological comparison mirroring the work of jordan maxwell. or the infamouse "raptures delight" song which clearly puts krs at the top of the top of real hip hop mc's. this album is a definite for none, other than those who seek more from their music rather than the same ol nonsensical entertainment.

To be very honest, this album isn't as bad as many has perceived it to be. The problem is that KRS-One has made so many great albums, that when he drops one that doesn't hit those expectations, people write it off. I Got Next is a dope album, in my opinion. It has it's share off good and bad tracks all though out the album. KRS still has the lyrics, but they're not just hard hitting like his previous albums, and the production here is hit or miss. Some of the tracks completely lack replay value to a point that they are just forgettable, as many old school fans (those who cherished Criminal Minded & By All Means Necessary) would question can Kris keep up with artists in spring '97, or has he fallen off? (Keep in mind hip hop was going through a major change around that time)
Well KRS is sort of hanging on with the times. As said before, he's still have the flow, but very little of his rhymes are quotable. The production ranges from mid to late 90's style, and it sounds pretty good here. The Showbiz produced "A Friend" sounds great, production wise. "Neva Hadda Gun" is another good produced song by Kris himself. "Heartbeat" was sure to get the party started back in '97. The song features Redman and Angie Martinez (who sounds off beat). "Just To Prove A Point" is innovative, but should never have been tried. KRS and Rock just don't mix, as proven on that song. As for the lyrics, their okay, but could have been better for late 90's standards. "Over Ya Head" is damn near over my head (he said "trust" more than enough times in the third verse). A good song would be the aforementioned "Neva Hadda Gun". "The MC" is dope as well. "Step Into The World (Rapture's Delight)" is another great lyrical song. There is a remix with Puff Daddy at the end of the album that is solid. I also liked "Can't Stop, Won't Stop". Everything else on the album doesn't standout, but are worth hearing for the most part. This is really not a bad album. In fact, it's much better than my expectations. I recommend people to try not to remember previous KRS-One or Boogie Down Productions albums while listening to this. Given that it could have been much better, it still holds it's own. This is one of the few albums on a major record label that wasn't as jiggy sounding as other releases around that time (although you can clearly tell Jive Records was trying to push him in that direction, which is one of the reasons for the remix track at the end of the album). It's still worth owning, but the trick is to not set the bar too high while listening. Peace. Lyrics: B Production: B- Guest Appearances: C+ Musical Vibes: B- Top 5 Tracks: 1. I Got Next - Neva Hadda Gun 2. Can't Stop, Won't Stop 3. Step Into A World (Rapture's Delight) 4. The MC 5. A Friend Honorable Mention: 1. Heartbeat (featuring Redman and Angie Martinez) 2.
