4.0 out of 5 stars A link between soul and disco, March 20, 2001

(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: I Got to Try It One Time (Audio CD)
On her first album,Millie Jackson had to fight against violins and unaproppriate,cheerful,Motown-like music backing. On the second ("It Hurts So Good") she found great producer (Brad Shapiro) who understand her and moved her further in funk teritory, perfectly suitable for her strong, passionate voice. On this, her third LP from 1974. Millie finally blossomed in a full throated soul singer who could cover Gladys Knight's "Letter Full Of Tears" and actually sound really great - althought its strange to hear this song without The Pips at the backing vocals, she uses her vocal similarity to Knight with a great advantage (and being somehow more earthy than Knight,Jackson is my favourite, sorry Gladys!). The first song ("How Do You Feel The Morning After") is really beautiful, but it's the last, funny and chunky "In The Wash" that points a direction Jackson would explore with a big artistic succes on her next album "Caught Up",the subject of anger, betrayal and defiance. And yes, having Cissy Houston for backing vocals helps as well...
