Review

“Charlie’s school and home worlds appear kinetic and alive...his story is timeless as he struggles to balance his love of a world outside the lines while feeling pressure to stay inside the lines at school.” (Booklist)

“Ms. Frizzle would be proud.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Bruce Degen is ALREADY famous for his beautifully drawn children's books, including Magic School Bus and very adorable animal characters.

But here his art style kinda resembles the style of Marc Brown, who created the famous Arthur series. What for?

Whatever. I really like the colorful, nicely detailed illustrations (I see Mr. Degen has experimented with scratching out patterns in the crayon, BTW) done in a whimsical comic strip format with cartoon balloons. And the story also carries a beautiful message for all our budding young artists, especially when they are somewhat stifled in a demanding environment where they have to deal with neatly done homework and disapproving family members.

My children really enjoyed this book. Charlie Muttnik is a boy who loves to draw but initially his home and school aren't the most ideal places for fostering his talent and interest. Charlie is not discouraged, continues to draw (even in the margins of his spelling tests), and his teacher eventually realizes that Charlie's talent for drawing could help him succeed in other areas of his studies where he is struggling. I recommend that every parent and teacher read this book to their children. The kids will be saying "I GOTTA DRAW" and might be inspired them to create many of their own original drawings! You will love Bruce Degen's illustrations and humor in this book too!

The 4 year old, the 6 year old and I return to this book often. Amusing story and good use of language.

When I received this book it was folded. That was probably the fault of the PO, but it also was like a publisher's pre copy. There had never been any attempt to have the book stapled and put together as a book. It was just a bunch of loose pages. I would not have purchased it if the seller had disclosed this.
