4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Tragedy, August 11, 2008
This review is from: I Had A Frightmare! (Mass Market Paperback)
Former Satan-worshipper and convicted serial killer Bill Keane stuns the world again with this wonderful little piece of writing. Definitely one of my favorite books, this is the story of a young boy's road to death. Keane has incorporated many personal experiences into this book, making it almost autobiographical. He excels in describing young Jeffy's late night Satanic rituals,... After Jeffy's father discovers of these practices, Jeffy is sent to jail, where the story takes a dramatic turn, as Jeffy develops a homosexual relationship with four fellow inmates..., 3 of whom are over 20 years older than him. The final scene, where Jeffy is put to death in the electric chair, is one of the best written pieces of literary mastership I have ever read in my life, as well as a culmination of years of suffering for Jeffy. ...Truly amazing

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing and Outside of the Box Thinking!!!, May 28, 2009
This review is from: I Had A Frightmare! (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is truly refreshing -- like jumping off a tall building on a sweltering summer day and enjoying the cool breeze all the way down. I was intrigued at first by the title "Frightmare" -- so "out of the box", so "new millenium". I would have been duly impressed with "I Had A Nightmare", but "Frightmare" turned my thoughts all around. With "Nightmare" it's quite clear WHEN the dream occurred, but not the emotions felt by the person having the dream. (Although I couldn't help but wonder if a person-for instance someone working a nightshift at a convenience store-who sleeps primarily during the daytime had a bad dream during that time (the day) would it be a DAYmare?? Who can say for certain -- but I think Bil Keane clearly resolved that issue when he created the word "Frightmare". Day or night -- it really doesn't matter, does it? It's a dream, and it's frightening. Think about it! Thanks Bil!! Keep on writing and I'll keep on reading!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Never fear! The Family Circus is here!! ^_^, May 31, 2003

This review is from: I Had A Frightmare! (Mass Market Paperback)
Bil Keane delivers to us a wonderfully created comic story, of the fabulously famous: Family Circus! He delights us with hilarious lines ("Read faster, Mommy, I can't stay awake much longer.") that remind us of when we were children.

The drawings are fairly well done, and it's one of those books you can just finish in one sitting. A funny line is: "This is my favorite pie, Mommy! What kind is it?"

It just goes to prove that we all have a little bit of kiddishness inside of us (Don't be silly, Dolly. They're freckles, not age spots."). It's a fun read, and if you don't like it, it certainly won't waste too much of your time if you're an avid reader, seeing as how it's only roughly around 50 pages (there are no page numbers).

So, enjoy! ("No, Grandma is ON Social Security, she's not a security guard.")

5.0 out of 5 stars Bill Keane does it again!, April 15, 1999

This review is from: I Had A Frightmare! (Mass Market Paperback)
This man is so prolific! Hes been drawing the family Circus for decades now! This reminds me so much of what American life is all about, each cartoon does. Those ghosts are so funny, and so are the little children's malapropisms. Bill Keane does poignantly capture the American family's essence.

This is certainly a fine compendium of wit and good olde-fashioned homespun American lore that I can read to my children.

5.0 out of 5 stars A candid endeavour, April 17, 1999

This review is from: I Had A Frightmare! (Mass Market Paperback)
I was really pleased by Keane's output this time around. He keeps his illustrations and subject matter simple, and are never off-colour. Thusly, the whole family is able to appreciate his works. The Family Circus is a great source of amusement for me, and it is also some thing that I am able to share with my children. We enjoy many laughs together over it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I was so impressed, but luckily no frightmare after reading!, April 17, 1999

This review is from: I Had A Frightmare! (Mass Market Paperback)
God bless you, Bil Keane, for keeping something wholesome in our newspapers. Oh, the joys of the Family Circus! From Billy's library trips, to Jeffy's "frightmare" to Dolly's dollhouse, to P.J.s weeping, to Daddy being the wonderful Dad he is, I really liked the way Keane deals with the American family. Who says that all is bad and corrupt with art today? This is so refreshing!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad effort, Keane, June 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: I Had A Frightmare! (Mass Market Paperback)
The Keane-ster dazzles us again with his light-hearted depictions of weekend life in an American family. My family and I get many laughs from this! Each cartoon is well drawn, and the puns are hilarious. Keane really creates a positive, happy feeling. It would be great if Keane brought back Not Me and Ida Know for the next book!
