5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Fun
This is a very, very funny book. Ironically, after a somewhat debauched holiday, I was seriously thinking of turning myself into our local sweat emporium to do something about myself; this slim volume is the perfect antidote, or if you will, guide book to such impulses. I admit I peeked at "The Ladies' Locker Room" chapter first but its male counterpart certainly brought...

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Fun, January 8, 2005
This review is from: I Hate the Gym (Paperback)
This is a very, very funny book. Ironically, after a somewhat debauched holiday, I was seriously thinking of turning myself into our local sweat emporium to do something about myself; this slim volume is the perfect antidote, or if you will, guide book to such impulses. I admit I peeked at "The Ladies' Locker Room" chapter first but its male counterpart certainly brought back vividly hideous memories of showers after peewee soccer in fifth grade, the grotty gym at college, and best of all, USArmy basic training. How did she do that?

Ms Kaminsky recreates in all their horror the sights, smells, and, yes, even textures of these 21st century torture chambers which only the truly demented can really enjoy. Read the book and skip the torture! She gives the reader the lingo and paints the scene so authentically that no one will ever suspect that you were doing mocha lattes at Starbucks instead of working out.

You will meet all the characters in your neighborhood and in your worst nightmares as well being well prepared to face yourself in the mirror. This is a fun book and a great gift for the overexercised in your sect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laughed out loud, February 17, 2005
This review is from: I Hate the Gym (Paperback)
I never laugh out loud when I read, and this title surely made me giggle. I saw the cool cover treatment and knew it had to be a fun, cute book. I was right. Such a light topic, but something many of us have on our minds: when are we going to make it to the gym--and do we really have to go??

5.0 out of 5 stars Gym-haters of the world: Unite!, January 17, 2005
This review is from: I Hate the Gym (Paperback)
This is a fast, fun, funny read that gives America's torture chambers (aka "gyms"), its sadistic machinery and vicious employees what they deserve.

The author blows the lid off of the sick culture of fitness and exercise. And she puts into words exactly what the rest of us feel: That we would rathre be ANYWHERE and do ANYTHING rather than go to the gym.

Which is why, instead of going to the gym like I should, I am writing this review.

Well done, Ms. Kamensky!

96 pages (and not even full pages - these are some teeny, tiny pages riddled with elementary illustrations) of sometimes-amusing gripes and tips about and for the gym. The author pisses and moans a lot, which is a given considering the title, but she seems to really be annoyed with "housewives" and "stay at home moms", as they are mentioned as a group even more than the "old folks" that she also cannot stand for various grody reasons.

The funniest comment was in the acknowledgements, where she thanks her editor/friend for "helping me see the light at the end of the tunnel," which to me makes it sound like she spent more than a full month on this spare little pamphlet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Funny!, November 3, 2005

This review is from: I Hate the Gym (Paperback)
Since I've been feeling particularily fat and out of shape these days, it's no surprise I was drawn to this book. I saw it at the bookstore and picked up to flip through and it was really funny! It made me laugh out loud and since the title says exactly what my friends and I say to each other, I bought my two best friends copies. Even though I still hate the gym, the author has such a funny take on it, and great names for all of the weirdos there that I laughed when I actually did make to the gym and recognized a few of the characters. (The Mirror Man - I hate The Mirror Man!) This book was a really fun read and made me feel like I'm not the only one who has to force themselves to go to the gym.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great potential but disappointing "read", December 28, 2005

This review is from: I Hate the Gym (Paperback)
This book is more of a long brochure than it is a book that you sit down and read. The concept is brillant and I will admit that I had really high expectations for it, so maybe I was destined to be disappointed from the start...

This book hardly takes any time to get through and I did laugh out loud a few different times when I was able to picture people from my gym acting like the ones mentioned in the text. My reactions and thoughts are very similar to the author's in a few instances when it comes to working out, but I did get annoyed with her constant whining and repeated observations throughout the text. This book is a slightly amusing, mindless read...IF you go to a gym. I can't imagine reading it if you don't and certainly wouldn't recommend that you pay full price for it no matter what.
