SULLY are back in the spotlight and reflecting light brighter than ever. The band is made up of a group of talented musicians including: Ian Duke (percussion), Dan McCormick (keyboards), Paul Prince (bass), Scott Strachan (guitar) and the unique vocals of Becke Gainforth. Becke, who was nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year from Ottawa's #1 rock station 'The Bear', uniquely states, "The music expresses a pent up, mixed up and slightly deranged bag of emotions."
Beginning as a basement jam in Ottawa, Canada, SULLY formed in 1995. That same year, the band decided to release their first album independently and burst into the Canadian music scene gaining swift attention. During the mounting success of their first album, SULLY had already started working on I Have Much to Report. This set of songs was different than their debut as it swayed into a darker, more experimental place.
After releasing this album through a Toronto independent label, SULLY was quickly snapped up by Nettwerk in 1998. They were immediately used as raw material for the late 90`s re-mix craze and were showcased on Plastic Compilation (Vol. 1) which included artists such as Sarah McLachlan, Chemical Brothers, and Propellorheads. This was followed up by the aforementioned album, I Have Much to Report. SULLY was featured in numerous North American publications (Alternative Press, Rolling Stone, Option, Chicago Tribune, Ottawa Xpress, NOW Magazine, and many more) with favorable reviews. After playing shows across the U.S. and Canada, SULLY began to accumulate a large fan base and the album remained in the top 5 position on the College Charts for several weeks.
Approaching the cusp of the Millennium, the band decided to travel the independent route once again and are still finding success. Their music is and has been consistently placed in a variety of film or video situations such as Those Who Hunt the Wounded Down (CBC film,1998), Ecstasy (film,1996), Bliss (TV, 2002), Get A Life (TVO,1999), Drop in (MTV-Canada, fall 2002), and a commercial for Cinematheque (a division of the Toronto International Film Festival,1996). The song Fidget landed in the #1 spot for Pop on Garageband.com, a website for indie artists featuring over 30,000 bands. A few months later, they shot their first video, Half of Once, with one of the competitive MuchMusic VideoFact grants. Most recently they have been chosen by a panel of industry judges to perform on a broadcast special for CBC (National TV in Canada) called "The Great Canadian Music Dream" in January 2003.
With the release of Bright Lights, SULLY reaches a place that is truly their own. These songs are not about clear thoughts, rational thinking and specific emotion, but rather from a world where they believe happiness and contentment is blasé. Drummer Ian Duke says, "Music can be a soundtrack to your life. Particularly with people who are having a bad time. In this case, we choose to give them their dignity, as opposed to offering pity, which is what most insipid pop music does." SULLY has maintained their philosophy of focusing on a collective music writing style. Vocalist Becke Gainforth thinks they have more fun remaining in an uncertain, unpredictable place. "It keeps our imaginations fresh and instincts alive, which in turn, retains the risk in our music."
*Sully is currently in the studio working on their 4th album (anticipated release fall 2002) with Tim Glasgow, from Sonic Youth`s Murray Street studio.

This surprised the heck outta me, getting referred by my online book vendor to 'artists that sound like' CocteauTwins--and then discovering SULLY. After a quick listen to RA samples, I jumped--and haven't taken this CD off yet. SULLY excels in producing "that sound" with wonderfully inventive melodies. And Becke's voice is transporting as is the guitarist's wanderings into deep DSP space. I even liked the sound of Ian's snare and wrote him about it! Look, bottomline--those of us who wait for VW commercials just to hear Robin and Simon on TV, and those of us that hang at triplo.com/mbv hoping that one day Kevin will give the tapes to Island--we need this band! Like we need fresh oxygen in the blood. They are a step forward--a delightful blend of all we've come to love plus tech and ambient. Get it--Get It NOW.Dan Shubin, Honomu, Hawai'i (formerly of Portland, OR. ha-ha)

I was walking through BEST BUY, and noticed this CD named Sully, being my nick name is Sully, I bought this without a second thought, thinking if it stunk, I'd toss it. I usually listen to top 40 stuff, but also really like Enigma, NIN, and others. When I listened to this CD, I was very suprised how much I liked it. This CD, like Enigma, is one that you want to listen to from start to finish. The songs are similar to one another, but have a very good sound, not something that has been copied, or done before. Looking forward to their next CD.

They have a lot to report,
By legis@netscape.net (Jacksonville, florida) - See all my reviews

Sully's debut album, I Have Much to Report, is an intense set of industrial-tinged alterna-rock with slight dance undertones. Although the group has some trouble writing solid, memorable hooks, they have an intriguing, cathartic sound which makes I Have Much to Report a promising debut. Sully's music tends to be dark and very atmospheric. While it's often composed out of jamming, the resulting songs are very focused and intense. But at the same time, the vocals are usually driven by sound rather then lyrics.
