I Have a Pony

Steven Wright is the ultimate in surreal comedians. While his humour is not uproarasiously funny it is comedy for the mind and keeps the listener intent on the speech he delivers. Most of his comedy revolves around obvious dilemmas in the English language. Steven Wright is extremely laid back, any furthe laid back he would fall over, this only...

Is it the voice or the content of the jokes? Either way, this is one hillarious CD. The deadpan nature of his delivery turns incredibly simple jokes into some of the most fresh and funny material you'll ever hear.

I first bought the tape nearly ten years ago, and laughed hysterically then. Now, a decade later, the material is still as relevant and funny as ever. The key to good comedy is making the material relevant to the audience, by discussing subject matter to which everyone can relate. Steven Wright finds a way to do this with some of the the most outlandish subject matter you'll ever hear, (ie. elevators in the middle of the desert, poison ivy of the brain, a pony in his apartment) - all the while making you think "It's so simple - why didn't I think of that?"

With the exception of a few sexual references (nothing explicit) - the material is very clean. No swearing at all!

This is not the kind of comedy CD you'll listen to once, then put aside and forget about. There are so many jokes, you could never remember all of them - so every listen is almost like the first. This CD is well worth the purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Some people are afraid of heights. I'm afraid of widths.", April 12, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: I Have a Pony (Audio CD)
"Rachel got poison ivy on her brain. The only way she can scratch it is to think about sandpaper."

"I bought some batteries, but they weren't included."

"I parked in a tow-away zone, and when I got back the entire area was gone."

"I lost a buttonhole."

"Right now I'm having amnesia and deja-vu at the same time."

"I have an enormous sea-shell collection. I keep it scattered on beaches all over the world. Perhaps you've seen it."

"I want to get a tattoo over my entire body of myself, only an inch taller."

"But the sign says 'Open 24 Hours.'" "Not in a row."

"You know when you're leaning back in a chair and then you lean way back and you're just on two legs and then you lean just a little far and you almost fall but at the last minute you catch yourself? I feel like that all the time."

IMPORT? This isn't available in the U.S. anymore! And yet Adam Sandler is a megastar...

And another thing: why doesn't Amazon have a "comedy" category under the CD/tape section?

5.0 out of 5 stars Steven Wright has abilities no one else posesses., October 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: I Have a Pony (Audio CD)
Steven Wrights comedy is so cerebral that any person, with a frontal lobe, should appreciate it. With classic jokes like, " Last week I spilled spot remover on my dog..... Now I can't find him" and "I have the ability to levetate birds... but no one cares," everyone in the listening radius should be rolling on the ground. Steven Wright is a master of dead-pan and no one will ever superceed his prowess. Truly a perfect album for anyone who loves to laugh.

5.0 out of 5 stars The funniest stand up comedian there is, May 5, 2003

This has to be the funniest stand up comedy album ever made. Steven Wright speaks in a slow sort of retarded sounding style which fits his comedy extremely well. The track listing on the back says all songs written by Steven Wright but don't worry there's no cheap attempt to launch a signing career here all the tracks are him speaking stand up.

This album is full of hilarious stuff I don't really want to give anything away for future listeners but this album is very funny. Yesterday I......no that wasn't me! is one small example but I don't want to wreck the experience for anyone else. Steven Wright covers a vast range of topics from girlfriends, hitchhiking, his diary he kept as a baby, parking to pretty much every part of day to day life.

Parents note this is clean comedy, there is no swearing on this album at all so all ages can enjoy the magic of Steven Wright. This album is usually pretty cheap but worth full price. Definitely the best stand up comedian I've ever heard. He's the "Weird Al" of the stand up world. Buy this album.

Steven Wright is a hilarious comedian with a bland, straight delivery that might not be for everybody. But if you are a Steven Wright fan, this is the only comedy cd that he has released. This CD is old, probably 20 years old, so some of the stuff may be a bit dates, but it is still hilarious. Wright has gone on to do some acting and has appeared on talk shows. There are also many jokes attributed to Wright on the internet. Many of those sound like they could be, but really aren't. For true steven wright comedy, check out this CD. While there may be some sexual innuendo in a few jokes, the humor is really clean and not any bad language that I can remember.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Timeless Comedic Genius, January 11, 2003
This review is from: I Have a Pony (Audio CD)
Steven Wright has a unique style, that makes him stand out from many of the young and hip comics currently on the scene. He doesn't cuss, talk about sex, attack celebs, play into stereotypes, and play 3rd rate guitar to entertain. His wit is his talent, and his genius encourages You to think, and enjoy his clever observations, questions, ponderings, and line liners. With the exception of Groucho Marx, I have never seen a comic more widely quoted than Steven Wright. There will never be a movie like "Man On The Moon" to celebrate his genius, but his material, unlike many of today's comics, will stand the test of time.

I tried to get a few quotes from this CD to show you just how good it is, problem is, I'd end up reciting the entire album ! It's simply unbelievable how hilariously funny this CD is ! Truly unique and original ! Two things bother me, though ! ONE : Why do Americans have to buy this album as in import from Australia ? Shame on whoever is responsible for not releasing this album in the USA ! Thank you, Australia ! TWO : Why doesn't Steven Wright make more albums ? He's an absolute master of comedy !

5.0 out of 5 stars Found it cheaper., October 12, 2004
This review is from: I Have a Pony (Audio CD)
Okay, I haven't actually ordered it yet, but I did notice that Steven Wright's website has a store with this on it, presumably not the import, for $12.99. google for Steven Wright should give you www.stevenwright.com. There's some DVD's there as well.

UPDATE - Received this last Christmas. Very funny, if you like his style of humor. My advice is to watch the video stream on stevenwright.com for a sample of his style of humor. If you like that, there's 40 minutes of similar jokes on the CD. If you can't stream video for some reason, a google search for "Steven Wright jokes" should turn up some of the one-liners, although I often find them to be misquoted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absurd and hysterical, July 24, 2001
This review is from: I Have a Pony (Audio CD)
Steven Wright is very, very funny. His is humor of the absurd. Those who don't "get" it may have lost their ability to see things in a fresh way. This is a Boston concert recording in front of an appreciative audience and is, like Steve, very, very funny. Hopefully he'll come out with another CD someday.

5.0 out of 5 stars Steven Wright Roaring, December 1, 2005
By

This review is from: I Have A Pony (Audio CD)
The only or one of the few Wright recordings available legally where I live, "I Have A Pony" is a truly great experience of a comedian displaying wonderful power. And I'm not even particularly partial to one liners or a dry delivery. Hearing Wright both truly master AND achieve humility before comedy here is like watching Spielberg direct, Lennon play guitar, or Walt walk around Disneyland. He is an artist doing comedy here, not a comedian. Near perfection. Great comedian's material is comparatively timeless to lesser ones, and this being my first and only purchase of a Wright work, this 1985 recording could have been released yesterday. I guessed it was released in 1988 or so.

I was shocked to learn how small his discography is. It's possible Wright has chosen not to release a great amount of material because this album is basically perfect. He proved himself 20 years ago, so what's the point of releasing anything else if free of financial motivation? I'm sure his appearances sell out, but "I Have A Pony" must sell unbelievably well if Wright has significant clout over the size of his discography. Very impressive.

His brilliance lies in his ability to make ironic and disparate connections between things the majority of listeners in a mechanized society can relate to. I also respect his choice not to either pander or talk down to his audience by imposing any preconception to their knowledge or experience. Most people are more knowledgeable than everyday interaction requires. With Wright, if you get a joke, great...if not, oh well - here's another one. And although a sophisticated Manhattan audience, this is what a group of people sitting in front of a comedian should sound like: in the process of being SLAYED with laughter. Wright makes no apologies for his subjects. After many a gag I would find myself having to rapidly consider the first part of it in order to find the connection between the second, and I was never disappointed. If genius is the ability to take two things and find a connection between them in order to create a useful, third thing (and I personally believe it is), then Wright is one a hundred times over on this album.

I would recommend this album/CD to anyone. Literally. And no aspiring young comedian should be without it (no I'm not an aspiring comedian but appreciate a good one). Great material to listen to while driving. Driving your pony to the kitchen, of course.
