5.0 out of 5 stars Mellow Shearing with superb sidemen, December 3, 2005

(REAL NAME)
Enough has been said about how the warmth of a live recording with an audience stimulates performers to "pull all the stops". This recording is a very good example of that. Shearing & Co. were captured at their best. The masterpiece Brazilian tune Zingaro (also known as Retrato em Branco e Preto) gets the royal treatment. I have versions by Brazilian performers, but Shearing here gives it all his heart, and it shows!

All of the tracks are given beautiful musical craftsmanship by an excellent ensemble led by Mr. George Shearing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another small group winning set by the always solid Shearing..., December 22, 2011
My first jazz concert was an appearance by The George Shearing Quintet in 1960 in New Jersey, and it hooked me on him and on jazz, apparently forever. Mr. Shearing had a very long career, recording with orchestras, solo, with one partner, and with trios, quartets and quintets. This 1992 outing was a trio, and it's really nice music. There are 11 tracks lasting 67 minutes, and you won't mind letting it just play a second time. The composers include Charlie Parker, Henry Mancini, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Dave Brubeck, Alan Jay Learner, Bud Powell, and Shearing himself. Can't pick 'em much stronger than that for a single disc. Everything's worth hearing and having, so grab this one if you love piano jazz.
