The I-Jam IJ-50 MP3 player enables you to take your favorite music with you wherever you go. It has no internal memory, but it includes an 8 MB CompactFlash memory card, which you can load with music using the USB port that connects to your computer. With additional CompactFlash cards, you can carry up to 128 MB of music with your IJ-50.

The IJ-50 comes with an 8 MB CompactFlash card, a USB CompactFlash card port, recording hardware and software that lets you connect directly to your PC or Mac for audio recording and music management, and stereo earbuds. It runs on 2 AAA batteries (not included).

Bought the I-Jam IJ-50 when it was on sale, and right after receiving a gift certificate. So, I thought, didn't have an MP3 player, had two 128 Meg CF cards (Microtech), so this was a perfect match, right? WRONG! While the sound is decent at best, and the extremely small size is a bonus, there are lots of negatives:

1) wouldn't work with my Microtech 128 Meg CF cards, so I was stuck with 8 Megs. If I bought 32-64 Megs of compatible CF, the price would have been the same as more full-featured players, like the HipZip (which I LOVE and currently own), so what's the point?

2) Flimsy construction; if I kept it longer than the week I had it, I don't think it would have survived the year.

3) Can't fast-forward/rewind within a song

4) no LCD, therefore no idea what song comes after what

5) no tone control of any sort

6) poor battery life (many other players come with rechargeable internal Li-Ion batteries)

Rather than spend $100 on this player, and then another $70-$150 on memory, you're better off spending similar money on a player that actually has some features (at least a screen and tone control/fast-forward, for God's sake). Avoid this one...

Price and size are great. It's tiny, light and accepts standard CF cards to increase the memory size (no one in their right mind would use the 8mb card it comes with). Who cares about an LCD display or equalizer functions?

I do have a couple of problems with it:

1) Despite taking "industry-standard" CF cards, there are some cards that are incompatible with the IJ-50. I bought a Simple 96MB card only to find it was not compatible. There is a compatiblity matrix on www.ijamworld.com. Make sure your card is supported before buying. I have successfully used a Kingston 48MB out of the box with the IJ-50.

2) No belt clip or arm band. This radio is useless for exercise except for walking. A belt clip would next to nothing to the price but make this player so much more useful. As is, it is very easy to drop while running (as I have done several times).

Some confusion on these reviews. The IJ50- has no radio tuner. It's a bare bones plasticky and as your sole player not a load of fun. Though if you already have CF memory lying around, need a usb card reader you basically get the player for ($), assuming a ($) or less price tag. Headphones are as expected useless and uncomfortable to boot.

I was lucky enough to win one of these, only reason I have it, and the sound quality,battery life are excellent. Build quality yuck. Software accompanying it not amazingly useful and I-jam's site, a dogs breakfast. Are they selling MP3 players or DVD's this week :-) you decide. This player is hideously outgunned for the price, as such it would not be possible to recommend it for anything other than a clearance price, and then only if you need a CF reader.
