Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

The IJ-828 portable MP3 and CD system is I-Jam's first product that will play both MP3-encoded CD-Rs and regular-format audio CDs (though it won't play CD-RW discs). Since MP3 discs can hold up to 150 songs on a single disc, owning the IJ-828 means you can bring hours of music with you on just a few CDs wherever you go. Just pop the disc in, and the IJ-828 will automatically detect the format. Since it is a portable unit, the IJ-828 features 50-second electronic antiskip protection and a minijack headphone output (headphones not included). A line-out jack will let you connect it to a larger system like your stereo receiver.

Five preset equalization modes let you tweak your sound preference (normal, bass, high bass, superwoofer, and high treble). Along with the built-in Dynamic Bass Boost System (DBBS), these presets will give you some listening flexibility. For convenience, I-Jam has included such features as a built-in recharge circuit for rechargeable batteries, auto level control to smooth out the volume difference between songs, and a voice recording function that records up to eight minutes in the IJ-828's 8 MB RAM.

The I-Jam IJ-828 uses a 4.5-volt DC power supply, two AA batteries, or two 1.2-volt ni-cad batteries. CD burning software is not included.

I-Jam offers a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

3.0 out of 5 stars This was OK until Rio Volt came out, April 8, 2001
By
This review is from: I-Jam IJ-828 Portable CD/MP3 Player with 8 Minutes of Voice Recording (Electronics)
I bought my IJ-828 almost a year ago and swapped it two weeks ago for Rio Volt. The I-Jam product served me well, but it is pretty much outdated by today's standards.

It is built on the dreaded Genica platform (although I must admit the only quality problem with my player was that it did not charge NiCds, althought the instuction said it would). Genica means:

- playback quality which is ok, but inferior to Rio Volt

- it can't play MP3 files with the bitrate above 192 kbps

- it doesn't support ID tags and has only a 1-line numerical display

- it doesn't have a remote control

- cumbersome directory navigation and no RESUME function

- SHORT battery life for MP3 playback (4 hours)

- cheap looks and chroming on buttons which is wiped off in two months

The positives of owning it are:

- PRICE (this thing is cheap, but it does what it is supposed to do)

- decent MP3 antishock (it spins the disk continuously, and 40 sec buffer is more than enough) -- pls note that the player either doesn't have or has very short CD antishock

- stylish headphones (I wouldn't say the quality is superb, but the looks are cool)

- 8-min voice recording (theoretically it is a plus, but for me a useless feature - never used it)

Overall rec: if you can afford getting yourself a Rio Volt, wait before Amazon has it back in stock. Do not get stuck with a previous-generation product, which IJ-828 is.

I can't express how much I love this product. The combination of mp3 and CD systems in one revolutionized the way I looked portable music. I fully endorse and recomend it.
