3.0 out of 5 stars Catchy, infectious...but not much meaning to it, June 2, 2008
By
This review is from: I Kissed A Girl (MP3 Download)
Katy Perry is actually an artist who's been around quite some time, but I actually never heard of her until I heard this rather upbeat song on my local radio. I don't deny that this is a single that fits hand in glove with popular music of the current spectrum. It has a synth, powerpop driven melody similar to artists like Madonna (who quoted her as being "the next big thing"). All well and good, and she actually has a decent voice to boot...but I don't know if "I Kissed A Girl" has much staying power other than the wave it's riding at present.

I actually agree with quite a few opinions here on the note that it's very catchy, sports decent vocals, and has the potential to get stuck in your head, but I found myself agreeing most on the note that the song itself doesn't have much lasting value, as does much of the songs in current mainstream pop progressions (that's in general, not necessarily genre bound). Taking aside its infectious melody and easily singable chorus, is it really a solid song in terms of what it offers? I don't think it is, and this isn't even considering the nature of the lyrics themselves, which aren't really objectionable compared to some of the more overt profane lyrics that are peppered into quite a few songs in current rotation.

It's one of those songs you'll listen to with a cheesy, yet bouncy feel and infectious vibe, but several weeks later, you'd move on to the next best thing.

I'd argue this song isn't really my cup of tea, I've heard better artists in the power pop progression with better lyrics, melody and overall undertones. It'd be interesting if we saw her as an artist outside of just this one song, which seems to be riding on the stream of catchy melodies and controversies with respect to thematic.

I find it shallow because true music to me is more than just moving along to it (though that's certainly not a part to be negated; I'll fully admit to loving songs that I can dance to and laugh at on a quirky level, but even with this, the melody feels like it doesn't take too many liberties in being different from mainstream pop progressions), but rather how you connect to it and what meaning it has for you. Songs can even be rebellious or push the envelope but still have a point at which they still connect with you. Unfortunately, "I Kissed a Girl" didn't make as strong of an impact.

I'd try it if you're looking for something quick and quirky to listen to, or something similar to what Madonna's new music sounds like, but I wouldn't come into it if you're looking for something unique or to connect to.

5.0 out of 5 stars This song rocks!!, May 28, 2008
This review is from: I Kissed A Girl (MP3 Download)
First, let me say I am straight, but this song rocks. There are people who need to get over their prudish way. There are a lot of songs out there that are more explict than this one. This song has a great and catchy beat. It amazes me that there are songs that have every curse word known to man and pretty much verbal porn and people have a problem with song. Unreal!

It worked for Madonna - a little controversy to get people talking and some decent music to back it up. Fun song if you don't get too serious about it. If you are offended by the content, either try being a little more open minded or just don't listen. Save the flames for music with really harmful content - misogynistic, violent rap comes to mind...
