5.0 out of 5 stars This song rocks!!
First, let me say I am straight, but this song rocks. There are people who need to get over their prudish way. There are a lot of songs out there that are more explict than this one. This song has a great and catchy beat. It amazes me that there are songs that have every curse word known to man and pretty much verbal porn and people have a problem with song. Unreal!

3.0 out of 5 stars Catchy, infectious...but not much meaning to it
Katy Perry is actually an artist who's been around quite some time, but I actually never heard of her until I heard this rather upbeat song on my local radio. Katy Perry is actually an artist who's been around quite some time, but I actually never heard of her until I heard this rather upbeat song on my local radio. I don't deny that this is a single that fits hand in glove with popular music of the current spectrum. It has a synth, powerpop driven melody similar to artists like Madonna (who quoted her as being "the next big thing"). All well and good, and she actually has a decent voice to boot...but I don't know if "I Kissed A Girl" has much staying power other than the wave it's riding at present.

I actually agree with quite a few opinions here on the note that it's very catchy, sports decent vocals, and has the potential to get stuck in your head, but I found myself agreeing most on the note that the song itself doesn't have much lasting value, as does much of the songs in current mainstream pop progressions (that's in general, not necessarily genre bound). Taking aside its infectious melody and easily singable chorus, is it really a solid song in terms of what it offers? I don't think it is, and this isn't even considering the nature of the lyrics themselves, which aren't really objectionable compared to some of the more overt profane lyrics that are peppered into quite a few songs in current rotation.

It's one of those songs you'll listen to with a cheesy, yet bouncy feel and infectious vibe, but several weeks later, you'd move on to the next best thing.

I'd argue this song isn't really my cup of tea, I've heard better artists in the power pop progression with better lyrics, melody and overall undertones. It'd be interesting if we saw her as an artist outside of just this one song, which seems to be riding on the stream of catchy melodies and controversies with respect to thematic.

I find it shallow because true music to me is more than just moving along to it (though that's certainly not a part to be negated; I'll fully admit to loving songs that I can dance to and laugh at on a quirky level, but even with this, the melody feels like it doesn't take too many liberties in being different from mainstream pop progressions), but rather how you connect to it and what meaning it has for you. Songs can even be rebellious or push the envelope but still have a point at which they still connect with you. Unfortunately, "I Kissed a Girl" didn't make as strong of an impact.

I'd try it if you're looking for something quick and quirky to listen to, or something similar to what Madonna's new music sounds like, but I wouldn't come into it if you're looking for something unique or to connect to.

It worked for Madonna - a little controversy to get people talking and some decent music to back it up. Fun song if you don't get too serious about it. If you are offended by the content, either try being a little more open minded or just don't listen. Save the flames for music with really harmful content - misogynistic, violent rap comes to mind...

4.0 out of 5 stars a great summer song, June 17, 2008
This review is from: I Kissed A Girl (MP3 Download)
This is one of those songs that comes along at the beginning of the summer and just grabs everyones attention. It may not be the most complicated song in the world but damn it is catchy; and thats usually all it takes for a big summer hit. I'll bet by the end of summer even soccer moms will be driving around and singing along about how they kissed a girl just to try it..

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly Fun Song!!, June 6, 2008

Controversial? Yes. Good? YES! Katy Perry is one of my favorite artists out there right now because she's not afraid to say anything! Maybe more people should learn to be more like that, instead of hiding all the time.

As for the subject matter here...ok, Katy is the masteress of making fun of things. If you think about it, she's more or less making fun of those Girls Gone Wild. They kiss each other...hope their boyfriends don't mind...and they don't know each other. There you go. It's HUMOR.

A lot of people these days lack humor.

Katy Perry is an amazing singer/songwriter and I hope the best for her!!

5.0 out of 5 stars lighten up and take the stick out, June 5, 2008
This review is from: I Kissed A Girl (MP3 Download)
this song is campy and fun with a catchy beat, the one song i've heard in some time that actually had me singing along the first time i caught it on the radio, and if middle america is so concerned about something as silly as this, lets take a real look at what our children listen to. At least this isn't about smacking a ho's a**, getting high or gloryfing violence against women or each other. I would rather have my kids hear something like this than identifing with gangbangers, thugs, and drug addicts

3.0 out of 5 stars You May Now Kiss the...Uh...Girl Who... Uh... Ahhh Never Mind, May 27, 2008
This review is from: I Kissed A Girl (MP3 Download)
This song is so blatantly self-explanatory, it screams controversial. Sure it has all the pop flavorings of a Justin Timberlake track, but lyrically, this song is anything but mainstream.

Lyrics: Nope, not reviewing those this time. You form your own opinion.

Music: Modern pop that is all the rage that you would hear on any top 40 radio station today. In fact, musically, it's sort of lazy and bland. Of course if you're a mainstream radio zombie, you'll love the music.

Overall, this song hides nothing. Take it or leave it, or see it as the camp fest it is. I mean, the moon doesn't have this much cheese! This is certainly a one-hit wonder, in the vein of "I Like Big Butts," and other camp classics.

The review title references a Family Guy episode title if you were wondering.

Update: What does his say about the nation? Even though Coldplay is deservedly #1, this drek of a song is #2, and could rise further next week. But critically, it's a failure beyond all measure. But AllMusic sums it up best, and gets Perry down to the nail. Really people, this is the truth on this song.

"The problem is not with Katy's gender-bending, it's that her heart isn't in it; she's just using it to get her places, so she sinks to crass, craven depths that turn One of the Boys into a grotesque emblem of all the wretched excesses of this decade."
