5.0 out of 5 stars I'm no church goer but this CD is stunning!!
I am not normally a gospel music fan. I bought this album after hearing the sound track to "O Brother Where Art Thou" that featured "I'll Fly Away" by the Cox Family and Allison Krauss. I am now hunting down all I can find. The vocals are bell ringing. The instrumental work is world class. I think that "The Far Side Bank of Jordan" is worth the price of the entire CD...

This entire CD is superior work that is a must have. No Prozac or Zoloff will lift your spirits as much as this single CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like Bathing in the River Jordan, January 14, 2002
This review is from: I Know Who Holds Tomorrow (Audio CD)
Alison Krauss could have stayed with the Cox Family for the rest of her career and not sold herself one inch short. She and the band are one, seamless, adding to each other, not one of them ahead of the next. I don't know what you call the intangible quality captured here, but I sure recognized it when I heard it, and I bet you will, too. My favorite song is Far Side Bank of Jordan; I look forward to it every time I listen, as I happily endure all of the amazing songs the come before, and after, it. This is powerful, rich, reassuring music that's full of longing and belief. I've been searching for it -- and the unformed feeling it conjures up -- since I was a kid. If this disk doesn't make you feel God, nothing likely will. While I haven't been to communion in about 20 years, if they'd been singing these tunes on Sunday mornings, I bet I'd still be going to church every week.

5.0 out of 5 stars For Christians and just plain music lovers..., July 24, 2000

I Know Who Holds Tommorrow will go down as one of the classic country/bluegrass/gospel albums. Allison Krauss and the Cox family singers remind us what gospel music is about. It's about the delicate harmonies, subtle shadings, and clean sounds that make shiver run down your spine. "Will there be any stars" has also been a classic gospel standard and this recording gives it a fresh new feel. Willard Cox rendition of "Far Side Bank of Jordan" is an absolute tear jeaker. He captures the sadness and yet the joy, of knowing that there will be a better place. Sydney's verision of "Love me Like A Rock," I think is better than Paul Simon's. Yet nothing moves this album more than the perfect voice of Allison Krauss. Her delicate harmonies with the Cox sisters are exquisite. I hope that Country Music and mainstream music will soon realize that Allison Krauss is the finest singer/musician of her generation and her amazing talent is heaven sent. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful gospel., August 17, 2005
This review is from: I Know Who Holds Tomorrow (Audio CD)
I actually bought this as a gift. I was not a gospel fan. Neither was I an Alison Krauss fan. And who was the Cox family? Now that has all changed - I loved it! Very moving, emotionally and spiritually (even if you are not that way inclined). I quote from the giftee: "An excellent example of the genre." Take the time to listen for yourself - it will be worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mellow bluegrass gospel, September 29, 2004
This review is from: I Know Who Holds Tomorrow (Audio CD)
If you only like bluegrass music of the high-energy variety, you are advised to give this album a miss. Here, Alison Krauss and the Cox family present a bluegrass gospel album that is very relaxing. Some of the songs could have been given the high-energy treatment, including Everybody wants to go to heaven (a cover of a Loretta Lynn song) and Will there be any stars, but even these songs are performed with restraint.

The Cox family (as present on this album) are made of two men (Sidney and Willard) and three women (Evelyn, Suzanne and Lynn) and all five get a chance to sing lead, as does Alison - however, it is Alison, Suzanne and Evelyn who are most prominent overall.

Many of the songs are covers, of which the most familiar may be Where no one stands alone and Far side bank of Jordan, but other notable covers include Loves me like a rock (Paul Simon) and Remind me dear Lord (Dottie Rambo).

I can see from reading other reviews that this album does not suit everybody but I love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Match!, December 14, 2003
This review is from: I Know Who Holds Tomorrow (Audio CD)
I bought this CD because I (a) think Alison Krauss is the best thing that has happened to bluegrass music in a long time, (b) like the harmony of the Cox Family, and (c) like "Will There Be Any Stars In My Crown" a lot. In addition to that great song, there are many other good ones here: the song made famous by George Beverly Shea years ago,"I'd Rather Have Jesus", "Jewels", and the song that June and Johnny Cash sort of took for their own, "Far Side Of Jordan." Okay. We understand that the theology here probably doesn't match literalist Christianity-- there will be no marrying or giving in marriage in heaven-- but the sentiment expressed is real and touching anyway. Who of us, regardless of our beliefs and particularly at the Christmas season, would not want to get a glimpse of a departed loved one? The only song that moves me not at all here is "Loves Me Like A Rock." A waste of good singing talent.

The Cox Family has beautiful harmony. I would say it's from singing together for a long time as a family. But that doesn't explain the phenomenon of Ms. Krauss, who does "move me like a rock."

A great CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Know what album should have won a ton of Grammies., September 26, 2000
This review is from: I Know Who Holds Tomorrow (Audio CD)
I Don't often review music because it is hard for me to explain why I like or dislike a CD, (I either like it or I don't) this one is my favorite bar none.

There is not one week entry on this CD every song is perfetly song, mostly by Alison who has a voice that can only be descibed as a gift from heaven. Alison handles every picth from the highest to the lowest flawlessly in every song from the slowest to the most upbeat. Every Song on this CD is bluegrass/Gospel at it's best. Listen to this CD for just ten minutes and you couldn't possible be anything but joyous and happy.

I heard "In the Palm of Your Hand" from this CD on TNN last night....one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard....I will buy the CD for that song alone, knowing that the rest can't be far different! Thanks Amazon, for making this kind of research possible! And thanks, Alison!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gospel Bluegrass gets the Alison Krauss treatment, June 26, 2004
This review is from: I Know Who Holds Tomorrow (Audio CD)
Alison Krauss discovered the talented Cox Family before most of the rest of the world, and she immediately knew what the rest of us were to find out: that they're a talented bunch of musicians.

On "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow" Alison and Union Station join the Cox Family for a disc of polished but soulful country/bluegrass gospel music.

Alison trades lead vocal duties with the Cox ladies, Suzanne and Evelyn, and Dad Willard and Brother Sidney chip in as well on harmonies that are "down-home" and juuuuuuuuuuust right.

If you have no interest in bluegrass gospel - this may not be for you. But if you DO - you really couldn't do better than this CD.
