5.0 out of 5 stars Kurt...The Hobbit With The Voice Of An Angel, February 7, 2004

I saw Kurt on the World Idol show and told all of my friends "This guy will win this contest--hands down." And sure enough he did. I ordered the CD from a Norweigian website since it wasn't available in the U.S. (yet) and I haven't stopped playing it since I got it. Kurts vocals on every song resonate with so much passion. I love every song on this CD. I am glad that he didn't do an album of only covers. The original songs are brilliant! My favorite is the hauntingly beautiful title cut "I". Kurt deserved to win the competition and he has definitely won the hearts of fans all over the world. I can't wait to hear more from this talented singer/songwriter. Keep them coming Kurt!

5.0 out of 5 stars KURT NILSEN ROCKS!!! THE BEST NEW ARTIST OUT THERE!!!, January 14, 2004
This review is from: I (Audio CD)
You probably saw him and heard him for the 1st time in World-Idol, when he won over a very dissapointed Kelly Clarkson. This guy has the BEST voice I heard lately (and I belive the WHOLE Europe and USA agrees with me, as they ALL gave him MAXIMUM points during the World-Idol competition). Buying his album will be a compliment for your CD collection. Personal favorites: "I", "Here She Comes" & "Breathe You In"... but the WHOLE CD is EXCELLENT!!! This is a MUST BUY!!!! (2 THUMBS UP)!

5.0 out of 5 stars You Are Amazing!!, April 10, 2004

First of all, I have to say have proud I am to come from the same country as Kurt Nilsen!

Did anyone know that the judges of the norwegian idol actually doughted him on his first audicion? He was so near not to make it. But fortunately he did! He has the bets voice ever! and i neary cried when he won the world idol.. I had followed him trough the whole norwegian idol, and i voted for him every time!

I've only seen him live once, but i'll never forget it. He preformed in one of the cities in norway called Sandefjord. He's voice is even better live!

My favourit track on the album have to be I, even though all are great!

The best part about him, is that he writes most of his music himself, pluss playing the guitar! He's amazing, and i can't believe he hasn't releaced his album in USA yet..

Love you, Kurt!

5.0 out of 5 stars KURT, an Average Joe but MAGNIFICENT MUSICIAN, April 8, 2004
By
This review is from: I (Audio CD)
For a debut album, this is nothing short of ASTONISHING! Kurt did not only showcase his amazingly unique voice in this album but also his natural flare for songwriting. He tackled the ballads eg.Lost in Despair, Breathe You In and I (all my personal favorite)with so much depth and passion as shown in the poetical lyrics of such songs. The way he sang these ballads with his haunting and yet pleasing voice is so captivating. The upbeat tones and rhythm of Smell the Roses, Last Days of Summer(another 2 personal favorites),Here She Comes, All You Have to Offer and Wedding`s Off have all the character of a music hit because of the simplicity of the text and yet honest and refreshing. However, there`s some sense of poetry and sophistication that one can feel in Lost in Despair, I ,Breathe You In and Weddings Off that I wouldn`t be surprised if any of these songs become a mega hit.Even the cover songs that he did came out better than the original just because of his fantastic and superior voice.
In essence, the power of this album can be mostly attributed to Kurt`s own(original)songs and songwriting ability. KURT is a budding music genius that the world need to nurture and appreciate at the same time.
Addendum, the best part of this album is that, there is not one bad song in it and that alone makes for a good buy!
I hope to see Kurt perform here in USA. KURT wish you a long and successful music career. I will buy ALL your albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars I am SHOCKED an artist THIS GOOD came from the Idol shows!!!, April 6, 2004

Larry Davis (NYC/Long Island, NY, USA) - See all my reviews

It's true!! Norwegian Kurt Nilsen sets the standard with "I" on the quality of how all future Idol releases should be.

Simply put, not only is "I" the finest pop album to be released in 2003/2004, BUT it's probably the best pop album of the past 10 years, maybe of ALL-TIME!!

Kurt is a MAJOR, GIFTED, ORIGINAL TALENT, period!!! Not only does he have an amazing, world-class voice, with a rich beautiful tone that oozes soul effortlessly, he is an astounding songwriter too (really melodic tunes that are original in music, and insightful in his lyrics, no cliches here, I would even call Kurt POETIC even, a bit melancholic, like someone from Scandinavia would be), and a good guitar player to boot...Kurt is a triple-threat!!! I REALLY want to buy his Fenrik Lane stuff, all of it, I don't even have to hear clips!!! I just want it all...Kurt is a treasure...

Simon Cowell was right in calling Kurt the Dark Horse of the whole World Idol competition, as he was the underdog, beating out the favoured Kelly Clarkson, as he deserved to, as Kelly is nowhere NEAR as talented as Kurt is, NO WAY!!!! I don't even think Simon is aware of how gifted Kurt really is!! How would Simon react if he hears "I"?? I think he would be in shock, as I am sure he has never come across anybody as good as Kurt before, with all his time spent in the music biz!!!

Kurt is a rare breed, a masterful songwriter with a voice in the same realm to deliver them home...straight to your heart and soul...AND what's great is, his forte is POWERPOP/ROCK + ROLL!! Not the same ol' R+B/cornball pop...Clay Aiken WISHES he could put out material as grand as Kurt's!! I was shocked with all the songs I heard...my fave is "Last Day Of Summer"...just a perfect, uplifting, powerpop song, with poetic/sad lyrics you rarely find in the genre!! He can also nail a grand ballad too with a haunting quality, songs like the beautiful "I" (featuring harmony vocals by May Hole, formerly of Norwegian girlband The Tuesdays), "Games We Play" and "Lost In Despair"...beautiful stuff!!

And the cherry on top of a perfect ice cream sundae, is he does 2 amazing covers...of Duran Duran's "Ordinary World" and Tal Bachman's 90s powerpop classic "She's So High"!! First off, amazing taste...second?? Kurt actually pulls off the feat of IMPROVING on them!!! He adds his own fresh spin and "Kurt-ness", makes them his own, and makes them better, and I love those songs!!! Kurt turns pop music into ART here. And another thing...the album's production...PERFECT!!! Not over the top, not demo-quality, just right...Ole Evinrude did a splendid job and he deserves an award or something...Kurt is a step above the Tuesdays and Ace Of Base records he did in the 90s!!!

Simple...WOW...Kurt is a mindblower of an artist...he transcends his influences, and fans of U2, a-ha and Coldplay will be astounded, like who IS this amazing artist???

An idea...play it for someone who knows good music, they will be floored, just don't tell em beforehand he came from the Idol competetion!!

The biggest shocker of the past 10 years...Kurt Nilsen!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars whoa..., February 23, 2004
This review is from: I (Audio CD)
I saw and heard Kurt for the first time on World Idol in January 2004. When he belted out "Beautiful Day" my mouth dropped open, and my husband and I just gaped at each other in surprise. I could not believe this average-looking guy with a gap between his eyeteeth could have such a fantastic voice! That'll teach me to judge by looks. However, since that performance I have flipflopped in my attitude: hobbit or not, his VOICE and personality make him handsome to me. I was sick to death of hearing about Kelly Clarkson and her one-song-repertoire "You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman" which I hate (the girl isn't Aretha) and I was all for Kurt winning World Idol. Ever since then I've been a fan. It's too bad "Beautiful Day" isn't on Kurt's CD, but we'll wait for the next one. This CD is great...you won't be sorry!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Talented Artist, May 14, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: I (Audio CD)
While watching Kurt on World Idol he was so REAL. I said he looked like he was singing in his living room he was so comfortable on stage. "I" is the perfect title for this CD. Kurt Nilsen's songs are pure and honest to who he is. His songs have an edge and when he sings deep, his voice reminds me somewhat of the Crash Test Dummies. My husband even enjoys Kurt's music, and he generally listens only to classic rock. I highly recommend this CD and I agree with the others that the title track is incredible.

5.0 out of 5 stars This hobbit can sing!!!!, April 17, 2004

Kurt Nilson easily stole the title of "World Idol" from Kelly Clarkson. The young Norwegian, who was told by one judge that he looked like a hobbit, has had the last laugh. His cd, "I", is an incredible debut cd and reveals a voice that sounds very much like a young Bono from U2. If there is any justice, this young man will sell lots of cds and we will see quite a bit more of him. His covers of the songs "She's So High" and "Ordinary Day" are amazing. He definitely deserved the title of World Idol. There are lots of good songs on here including "Wedding's Off", "Sue Me" and "Breathe You In". Give the little hobbit from Norway a try, you won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars I totally love this CD., January 15, 2004
This review is from: I (Audio CD)
I am really cheap and hate to part with my $. I sent to German Amazon.com to get this CD. It was totally worth it. I can't believe he wrote all these songs in English. A great mixture of angst, joy and observation.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a talented, wonderful surprise!, February 5, 2005
This review is from: I (Audio CD)
My husband and I were blown away last year by Kurt's win on "World Idol." His rendition of U2's "Beautiful Day" is better than the original. He has a sweet yet rockin' voice that playfully pulls you in with his angst, his strong lyrics and unbelieveable voice. BUY THIS CD!!! It's been in constant rotation at our house for a year, and we are still diggin it. WHY ISN'T KURT IN THE MAINSTREAM? He's my favorite -- he'll be yours, too.
