5.0 out of 5 stars An Exquisite Book December 13, 2011
By Deana
Format:Hardcover
This is an absolutely beautiful book, and one of my 22 month-old son's favourites. Rather than frightening children, as another review implied, this contains images that spur their imaginations. The book contains very simple prose describing different 'types' of cats - 'sunny' cats, greedy cats, cats with jowls, etc., and the images that accompany the text are by tribal artists from different parts of India. We live in India and have a lot of Indian books but this is one of my favourite - along with just about anything published by Tara Press.

5.0 out of 5 stars Expansive and precious December 20, 2011

I'm in like mind with Deana from India. I'm a born and bred American who grew up with the standard disney fare but i'm lucky my parents were quite broad in the additional books and art they exposed us to. I think there are some parents who will not appreciate what this book has to offer but I think it's amazing and rare to get something so carefully edited and constructed that can expose our kids to a very different way of looking at cats!
There is a plethora of cheaply-made kids books that portray animals in a mundane, commercialized, cartoonish manner that limits our kids imagination. this book is expansive rather than constricting or scary for that matter. My daughter is going through her toddler "scared" phase and she loves this book. As an adult with many graphic designer friends, I am simply excited to find a book made this way - decisive, and so well-crafted. I've already bought a second to give as a gift!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous book for all ages March 13, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is beautiful in every way -- the selections of papers, craftsmanship in the binding, and of course, the beautiful illustrations. My 1 year old daughter loves this book, and so do I. Even though the cats are not always represented in a way that makes them obviously cats, she always knows they are cats and says "kitty!" even at the most abstract interpretations of the feline.

5.0 out of 5 stars delightful illustrations November 9, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The book is very short but the illustrations, which reflect a range of artists and regional Indian artistic customs, are charming. I appreciated the information about the artists and styles that is provided in the back of the book. A great choice for children and adults who appreciate cats and art.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful art book December 20, 2011
Format:Hardcover
The author uses simple text to explain the traditional paintings and drawings of cats included to illustrate this book. I'd like to know more about the traditional paintings and drawings than the brief line about the origin of each listed in the back of the book.

Here's a sample:
"Worried cats

S l o w cats

Hurried cats

Thin cats"

1.0 out of 5 stars Creepy Cats September 26, 2011
By Merry
Format:Hardcover
Tired of your child begging you for a kitty? Then get this book because these creepy looking cats could give a child nightmares. The Sunny Cat has a frightening black face and some sort of weird snake-cat coming up behind looking over its shoulder. The Paired Cats and Bad Cats are also strange and disturbing. Sure hope they're not considering a dog book.
