Editorial Reviews

Review

"A midcareer classic for an artist whose talents have long been appreciated but never really captured on her own album. I Like to Keep Myself in Pain works as both a career summing up and a fascinating introduction to one of the most accomplished, underappreciated vocalists of the last two decades." --Greg Kot/Chicago Tribune

Product Description

Kelly Hogan takes her vast experience working with Neko Case, Andrew Bird, Mavis Staples, Drive By Truckers, The Mekons, and so many others, and molds that into something both new and instantly classic. Kelly curates an ambitious collection of songs, many written specifically for her, from M. Ward, Vic Chesnutt, Stephin Merritt, John Wesley Harding, Robyn Hitchcock, and Andrew Bird among others. She is backed on the album by an all star group of musicians: Booker T Jones, James Gadson, Gabriel Roth and Scott Ligon.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4th great album... June 5, 2012
Format:Audio CD
NPR has been streaming this for the past few days so I've been able to hear it while I wait for it to arrive. It's yet another excellent album from a great singer. I first caught her on the radio in 1990 when she sang with a band called "The Jody Grind", they did two albums then tragically lost two of their band members in a car accident. Hogan survived and went on to do 3 solo albums, the last was released in 2001. Since then she's been a backup singer for a number of huge acts, many of whom were kind enough to contribute songs for this album.

There are several tracks here that deserve to be huge hits, but my personal favourite is "Haunted".

In terms of style, she can sing anything and does. There's a country twang in her voice from time to time, but I've heard her sing torch songs, blues, jazz, rock, Gypsy (seriously - check out the first Jody Grind album "One Man's Trash Is Another Man's Treasure" for that gem.)

If you haven't heard of her, here's how you start:

The Jody Grind - One Man's Trash Is Another Man's Treasure
The Jody Grind - Lefty's Deciever
Kelly Hogan - The Whistle Only Dogs Can Hear
Kelly Hogan and the Pine Valley Cosmonauts - Beneath a Country Underdog
Kelly Hogan - Because It Feel Good

5.0 out of 5 stars Triumphant! November 24, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I remember Kelly Hogan when she sang with The Jody Grind back in the early 90s in Atlanta. The band had two albums on DB Records that are worth getting. Hadn't heard of her or thought about her until this album came across my radar recently. I was intrigued by the glowing reviews, so I took a chance and ordered it. WOW!!! This is without a doubt one of the year's best albums. Some great songs ... and that amazing voice of Kelly's. I won't be able to do her justice in comparing her to others, but she's in the vein of singers like Neko Case or Marti Jones (if any of you remember her!). I like the way that she mixes styles on this album, going from tunes with a country vibe, to others that have more of a jazz feel, or an Americana edge, or more towards pop --- yet with a twangy twist. And her voice wraps around each tune soulfully and seductively, pulling just the right nuance out of word. Hearing her sing a song as magical as "Ways of This World" just makes you want to shout out: "Sing it again!" It's that good. She's that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great to hear her voice
I've loved Kelly Hogan's voice since The Jody Grind days, and it is great to hear her again. She is, in my opinion, one of the great female singers working today. Keep 'em coming.

No one inhabits a song quite like Kelly Hogan, who is thankfully back after an 11 year recording hiatus. Her phrasing and enunciation is just perfect. Read more
