Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2—In well-fashioned rhyming text, a little boy takes readers through a day onboard his father's ship, listing all of the reasons he loves his pirate-captain dad: "I love my pirate papa!/He's the bravest buccaneer./He helps me put my earring on/and buckles up my gear." After a day full of adventures together, the man tucks his son into his bunk, reads him a book about Captain Hook, and kisses him goodnight saying: "I spent my life a-plundering./My treasures bring me joy./But there's nothing I prize more than you,/my dearest pirate boy." Bright, jewel-toned acrylic and mixed-media cartoon illustrations add to the fun, drawing children into the main elements of a pirate's life—ferocious crew, skull-and-crossbones flag, desert island, etc.—but also offering interesting humorous details sprinkled throughout the pages, such as the skinny mice in almost every scene who participate in the action. The father sports an eye patch, tricorne, and unbelievably long mustache, all authentic but somehow managing not to look too scary. Both front and back endpapers display a pirate treasure map. Given the fascination children have for the topic and the relative scarcity of easy pirate books, this tale will surely be met with delight by the youngest buccaneers.—Judith Constantinides, formerly at East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA

I recently purchased I Love My Pirate Papa - and I must say I truly adore this book. I work in Children's publishing and like to stay abreast of the new work out in the field. The story is very heartwarming and full of pirating fun, but it is really the illustrations that set this work apart. Kyle Stone's illustrations are fresh and unique and immediatley send anyone (young or old) deep into the heart of a pirate's most extravagant journey. Even the endpapers are fabulous! I highly suggest this book, it is truly a treasure.

I found "Mushy Mommy of two girls"'s criticism of the gender specificity of "I Love my Pirate Papa"'s closing lines to be quite ridiculous. I too am the mother of two girls, but I surely do not limit the stories I read them to those about little girls. I do not doubt the importance of introducing children to female characters and never wish to return to the days when nearly all main characters were male and told from a male perspective. But how reasonable is it to expect that all stories be told from a female's perspective or feature female characters? Or to discount stories that do happen to feature male characters or are told from a male perspective? Perhaps to be completely fair, "Mushy Mommy" and her like-minded peers would prefer that in the storytelling realm all characters remain genderless. "My dearest pirate child"?
Both of my girls adore this book - the bright, gorgeous, lush and painterly illustrations - the musical movement of the words (which I have recently begun singing to the tune of "The Ants go Marching" and has enabled my oldest daughter, age 4, to memorize the entire book and begin reading it to her equally smitten 18-month old little sister.)
What my daughters take more than anything else from this wonderful book is the universal message of love between parent and child.

Great great book. Short and sweet (piratey sweet) rhyming tale. The art really carries the story, the humour and the heartfelt theme.
If you've a pirate freaky child (as we do) this one fits the bill!!!

This is a great book all around. I am a children's book seller and would recommend this book as a wonderful gift for a boy or girl, or even for a dad, perhaps for a cute father's day gift. The rich, whimsical illustrations and pirate theme are perfect for today's children--pirates are in, and so are quality pictures books like this one!

I think the imagery and colors really carry this book. The story line is good, but the art is great. A great read for young pirates.

I purchased the book for my four year old niece after she kept asking, "what do pirates do?" No level of explanation seemed to satisfy her curiosity.

We were first introduced with Laura Leuck when my son, who was five at the time, fell in love with My Monster Mama Loves Me So. We spend so many nights reading the book, each time my son would say, I love my monster mama. We have since shared My Monster Mama with my niece, who loves it just as much. She truly enjoyed I Love My Pirate Papa, it is just what we have come to expect from Laura Leuck. Thanks to Ms. Leuck for the hours of bonding and sweet memories created over your work.

My 4 year old calls my dad Papa. They always go on Pirate Adventures when we go to visit so when I saw this book I HAD to have it. I was worried that the "papa" in the book would be a father, but it doesn't ever say specifically whether the pirate papa is the father or not. This was great news for me. My dad loved it and everyone who knows about their fun pirate games can't believe how absolutely perfect it is. The pictures are great and the rhyming story is entertaining for all.

So far I've bought this picture book for 3 friends who recently had babies. All of the newborns were girls. All of the parents loved the story. Just like illustrations from Kyle Stone's (the illustrator) previous book "Bury Me In the Library", these illustrations are also fantastic!!!
