Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-5 Chryssicas takes readers through a typical hatha yoga class, following six children and their teacher through basic breathing, stretching, and balancing exercises. The lesson begins with the equipment, then moves to the purpose of yoga, to warm-ups, and more challenging poses. Spreads are filled with photos of smiling children, surrounded by descriptive text and captions. Small inset pictures of two or three positions and their variations guide readers through the movements. Basic terminology is covered in the glossary. An appealing and helpful guide. Janice C. Hayes, Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro

From Booklist

Gr. 3-5, younger for reading aloud. In a book similar in format to Naia Bray-Moffatt's I Love Gymnastics (2005), Chryssicas, who teaches yoga to children at her Massachusetts studio, offers a vicarious tour of a typical class. Opening spreads discuss equipment, clothing, and camaraderie among the young learners. Later spreads showcase poses, grouped according to their desired impact on the body: "Hip Openers" and "Lift Up Your Heart," for example. The layouts, featuring many small inset photos pasted over larger images, are cluttered, and beginners looking for a specific sequence of poses and full instruction on breathing through the asanas may need further guidance. Still, the mostly sharp, clear photos of accomplished kids having fun (there's a final section on games) may inspire some children to dip into their first "Downward Dog," while others will marvel at yoga's mental benefits: "I pretend my thoughts are clouds and watch them float away," says a young boy. Also suggest Thia Luby's Children's Book of Yoga (1998) or, for young adults, Evan Cooper's Um, Like . . . OM: A Girl Goddess's Guide to Yoga (2005). Gillian Engberg

5.0 out of 5 stars We Love Yoga!, December 17, 2005

This review is from: I Love Yoga (Yoga for Kids) (Hardcover)
My children are too young for the yoga classes offered in my area (and there are very few studios). This book was suggested by my sister who lives in the NE, my 3 and 5 year old children love it! It is a great resource for learning the basics of yoga at home. It's also something different and fun for my kids who are now tapped out on the "sameness" of the classes offered....gymnastics, ballet, etc. We now love yoga!

5.0 out of 5 stars Yoga with ENERGY, January 3, 2006
This review is from: I Love Yoga (Yoga for Kids) (Hardcover)
WOW!! Finally a great yoga book for kids. Some of the other instructional books out there seem boring to my children...and me! This book is so well done. Some of my kids do yoga regularly and some don't, but they all enjoy looking at this book and trying the yoga poses. The pictures are very self explanatory. For the non-readers, the children are able to look at the pictures and do the poses. For the older children, they can see how to do the pose and then read an explanation in very easy to understand text. We look forward to another book from this author for teens!!! Namaste.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yogi, February 12, 2006
This review is from: I Love Yoga (Yoga for Kids) (Hardcover)
I take teen classes with Mary Kaye and enjoy them a lot! All of my family and friends have purchased the book and love it! I think the book is a great way for kids to learn yoga. The classes and the book combine balance poses and hip openers and end with relaxing poses. I always feel great after yoga, and I am glad I discovered it early in my life!
