A truly hilarious book,

I'm not sure what I expected from this book, but I was very impressed that it had won the 2008 Thurber Prize for American Humor. Knockoff movie adaptations don't get that kind of respect.
The book was hilarious. Self-referential, stuff from just about every teen movie ever made and even interludes with comic illustrations. Denis is an everyman nerd, although obviously the kind who will eventually blossom into a Bill Gates type, and Beth (as she admits herself) is a girl for whom high school will always be the high point of her life. It's all going to be downhill after graduation night. Wonderfully written; actually makes me want to see a movie I had no desire to see before.

I Love You, Beth Cooper By: Larry Doyle
***** (5 stars) I Love You, Beth Cooper is an overall good book. I really enjoyed reading it and I recommend it to female high school students. This novel is about an average, nerdy high schooler, Denis Coverman, that decides to change up his valedictorian speech to confess his love to Beth Cooper, who just so happens to not even be aware of his existence. The book takes place at the Buffalo Grove High School graduation and then, surprisingly enough, Denis's house party. Let me remind you that Beth Cooper is the head cheerleader with a big tough army boyfriend, while Denis is the captain of the debate team that had just made her boyfriend angry. I really liked the way the author explain deeply how Denis was feeling and the attitude of Beth, her best friends, and Denis's best friend. The author doesn't go into detail with the setting and other detail but I still enjoyed the book. It was worth reading 100%. The book had me laughing at many different parts. If you enjoy a good, funny, easy read, I suggest this book. Jaymee Holt |
