5.0 out of 5 stars power pop magnificence, February 6, 2003
This review is from: I Love You! Good Morning! (Audio CD)
this album is as good as it gets folks -- i would suggest getting on the Rocktopus bandwagon now. each and every time i spin this album in a social setting, everyone wants to know who's playing. the music is joyful, rocking, one hook after another, and quickly becomes a staple of your music collection. no road trip is complete without Rocktopus in your stereo.

these guys are the real deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars i looooove the rocktopus, April 15, 2003

How many cds can you honestly admit put an everlasting smile on your face? I bought this cd in the summer of '02 and I cannot stop playing it. The sounds and lyrics in this cd are outstanding. Hache, Spence, Brian, and Zach are wonderfully talented muscians from the PortlandME scene who truly create music because they love it.

Why would you not buy this cd? "The Single" is the first track, and is much fun to sing along to in the car. "Skin The Kat" is one of my all-time Rocktopus favorites. Try not to sing "stick my head in a garbage can" as you walk outside on a nice day. It's a catchy song. You'll enjoy that, along with "Bad Math", "Huge and Horrible", "The Great Escape", and "Hurricane".

Wow. These guys are amazing, and I hope that everyone gets a chance to find their all-the-time-smile cd. This one is mine. Kick it with the Rocktopus.

Once you and your peer/social groups hear this album, you will all find that it is as catchy as an STD in a college dorm. From 'the Single' to 'That Funny Sound' every song is just right for any situation that may arise. Great for long walks on the beach, caviar lunchens with corporate clients or driving on dirt roads with your dog and your wife in the back of your pick-up truck, this cd has something for everyone.

If you were a fan of Spencer Albee while he was with Rustic Overtones you'll have a new found appreciation for what he's doing with Rocktopus. It is...for lack of better words...AMAZING! He really stuck his neck out and tried something new and different. Even if you've never heard Rustic Overtones and have no clue who Spencer Albee is, I Love You! Good Morning! is a fatastic way to get acquainted with him, his new sound, and his bandmates Zach Jones, Pat Hodgkins, and Brian Higgins. The sound they put out together is upbeat, catchy, and, well, fantabulous. It's gauranteed to put a smile on your face.

Another great piece of art from Spencer Albee, and his new bunch of friends. Rocktopus rocks it hard with out sacrificing great, memorable melodies. You'll be singing along on the second listen. Every hook will stay in your head for days. A Beautiful cd.

From the opening of "The Single," to the groovy chrorus of "That Funny Sound," you will be blown away by this debut album from Rocktopus. The songs on this collection are very well crafted and evoke emotions that can only be conveyed through music. If you enjoy all types of music, then this is the perfect CD for you. It successfuly combines alternative rock, classical rock, pop, blues, and new wave music genres into one spiffy little package. I have never been so impressed by a debut album. A must have for all music fans!

5.0 out of 5 stars The skinny on a phat cd, February 18, 2003

As a fan of Rustic O, and especially Spencer A, this LP thrilled me. Not knowing what to expect, I was suprised by catchy original tunes. The album is gravelly and dark in places, and bubbly and almost love-sick in others. It is a slick combination of crunchy guitar riffs and funky organ grinds that really gets your attention and keeps it. Great CD. I'm excited to see what else these guys throw out there, I know I'll buy more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Proof that the Portland music scene does not suck., June 13, 2010
This review is from: I Love You! Good Morning! (Audio CD)
From the ashes of Rustic Overtones came Rocktopus, a vibrant rock/pop project led by Spencer Albee, who went from keyboardist in the former to the frontman of the latter. Although the band would eventually make a name change to As Fast As and subsequently enjoy broader success, their debut, "I Love You! Good Morning" remains one of the finest releases to come from the Portland, Maine music scene and begs to be heard, provided you can track it down first.

Taking front and center after being merely a player most of his career couldn't have been easy, but Albee proves himself to be not only a competent and unique singer, but a talented multi-instrumentalist as well, tackling guitars, keyboards and even the ukulele. By merging the psychedelic era of the Beatles with the alt-rock stylings of Weezer, the band inadvertently crafts a unique sound that is as fun as it is complex, while being appealing to just about any rock fan from every walk of life. From the distorted guitars of the appropriately titled "The Single" and the band's more underplayed "The Great Escape" to the jangly pop rhythm of "Armchair Advocate" -- complete with its witty lyrics that call out those who preach but don't practice -- there's plenty of variety to go around and not a stale tune to be found. The band's penchant for experimentation and nods to the past is ultimately heartfelt, and it shows in the music, which sounds as pure as a band untethered by a record label should.

A second release under the Rocktopus moniker, "Something Fierce," is just as tough to track down, however, the band would score a major label deal and you can still track down their As Fast As material with ease. "I Love You! Good Morning" is certainly worth keeping an eye out for, and if you happen to come across it, I can guarantee a satisfying listen.
