Book Description

Police officers shot

Detective Michael Bennett arrests an infamous Mexican crime lord in a deadly chase that leaves Bennett's lifelong friend Hughie McDonough dead. From jail, the prisoner vows to rain epic violence down upon New York City-and to get revenge on Michael Bennett.

Judges murdered

To escape the chaos, Bennett takes his ten kids and their beautiful nanny, Mary Catherine, on a much-needed vacation to his family's cabin near Newburgh, New York. But instead of the calm and happy town he remembers from growing up, they step into a nightmare worse than they could have ever imagined. Newburgh is an inferno of warring gangs, and there's little the police-or Bennett-can do to keep the children safe.

Target: Michael Bennett

As violence overwhelms the state, Bennett is torn between protecting his hometown and saving New York City. A partner in his investigations, federal prosecutor Tara McLellan, brings him new weapons for the battle-and an attraction that endangers his relationship with Mary Catherine. A no-holds-barred, pedal-to-the-floor, action-packed novel, I, Michael Bennett is James Patterson at his most personal and most thrilling best.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sooo Disappointed July 20, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I love James Patterson and have read everyone of his books. I, Michael Bennett was such a disappoinment. You get to the last page and think "What the hell just happened, did my Kindle drop some pages." You don't know how the books ends. How long do we have to wait for a sequel. Not fair to the Patterson readers!!

1.0 out of 5 stars I Michael Bennett July 14, 2012

I feel ripped off. The title is misleading and the story was far from finished. We should have been told up front that we were in for a three or four book adventure..I would have waited for the series

After my last Michael Bennett (MB) outing (Tick Tock) I was looking forward to, and hoping, that the next instalment would be ramped up in terms of excitement. As usual with a Patterson I read this latest one in a day. Irrelevant of whether you love his books, he has that writing genius that keeps the readers engaged and for me it means literally not putting the book down.

In the latest MB we see the lovely Detective (ooohh I think I have a crush) take on the infamous Crime Lord Manuel Perrine. As usual the whole Bennett troops are there, all ten children, Michael's Nanny Mary Catherine and Seamus. I think that alone means that readers become familiar with the family and you grow a certain attachment to them which keeps fans like me coming back time and time again. Unfortunately, the stories are not always James Patterson's best but because I love the characters so much, I tend to overlook that!

The story itself is the usual JP style of short sharp chapters with plenty of action. When Michael and his school friend Hughie, who is also his colleague, try to take on Perrine the consequences are dire. Michael's whole life is catapulted into danger as Perrine makes it his mission to destroy Bennett as well as his family. The story trundles along and I couldn't help but feel that although I loved meeting up with the Bennett crew again the story just wasn't as strong as it could have been. Yes there was plenty going on with drive by shootings, court room dramas and assassinations galore, but I just felt it was lacking that certain something. I enjoyed the personal element of the book and as usual Bennett's love life is as screwed up as ever and I am really looking forward to what happens next.

The ending however is what made the book that bit better.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing July 6, 2012

A great read as expected from James Patterson but really disappointed with an ending that means one will have to buy the sequel to find out what will happen!
Ripped off with this one!

1.0 out of 5 stars J. Michael Bennett July 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have read all Patterson's books, even after other authors do the writing and he just puts his name on it. It is obvious he did not even read what his co-author wrote as it ended at 92% of the story and the balance filled with propaganda for his next co-authored book. This book did not end, I think he left out a few chapters. He should try writng again, not just adding his name. Also the price of his books have increased far beyond other authors. He has lost it and I will not buy another of his books.

3.0 out of 5 stars Stay tuned for the next exciting installment? July 9, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Not withstanding the usual standard early canned rave reviews, I feel insulted and ripped off by the cliffhanger ending. Sorry if that's a spoiler to some but it's central to any honest review.

I can appreciate why Patterson rents/sells his name to any number of unknown authors in a marketing strategy to boost book sales. That's his business and not so much of a concern so long as the stories and the writing are good...regardless of who actually writes them.

Likewise, most all the popular fiction writers these days seem to want to establish their characters and stories as part of an ongoing series....again an understandable business decision and if the quality is consistent then it can be an ongoing pleasure to read new installments with familiar characters.

But now it seems we're reaching the point of "sucker serials"...where each one cannot stand on it's own and there is no certainty of any plot resolutions...ever. At $15-$25 apiece I expect to be treated better than that. If you're going to leave the story unfinished with a cliffhanger then at least have the common courtesy to add "Part 1" to the title.

All that said, I do like the Bennett story and characters. This one was a bit over the top but then fiction does tend to take lots of liberties. I just wish I hadn't felt like such as sucker at the end when I realized nothing had been resolved and in retrospect the main point of the book seemed to be a setup to entice me to buy the next installment.

If you ask me it's a step too far in this whole commercialization scheme of mystery novel writing. If each novel can't stand on it's own I think it is incumbent on the publishers and authors to let readers know in advance that they are committing to a serial story and should not expect any sort of closure when purchasing a cliffhanger interim volume. Call me crazy.....

3.0 out of 5 stars I, am disappointed July 13, 2012

Format:Audio CD
Michael Bennett and his brood and colleagues are very engaging. I like them even when the story line is hard to believe. Patterson's other protagonists are like that too; that's just part of his formula.

Anticipation may have been why I found "I, Michael Bennett" disappointing in the end. Well, it wasn't the end, of course, because the Bennett series is a series, after all. The problem for me was that there was no ending either.

And Mr P, the dance between MC and Michael has to move along or end. It's way past the cute stage.

More About the Author

It is no surprise that in January, 2010, The New York Times Magazine featured James Patterson on its cover and hailed him as having "transformed book publishing," and that Time magazine hailed him as "The Man Who Can't Miss." Recently, NBC's Rock Center with Brian Williams profiled Patterson's prolific career, AARP named him one of the "50 Most Influential People Who Make Our Days a Little Brighter," and Variety featured him in a cover story highlighting his adventures in Hollywood.

In 2013, it was estimated that one-in-five of all hardcover suspense/thriller novels sold was written by James Patterson, his books have sold over 300 million copies worldwide, and he holds the Guinness record for the most #1 New York Times bestsellers of any author. And his success isn't based solely on thrillers like the perennially popular Alex Cross, Women's Murder Club and Michael Bennett series. Patterson is now also the current bestselling author in the young adult and middle grade categories.

He's been called the busiest man in publishing, and that's not just because of his own books. For the past decade, James has been devoting more and more of his time to championing books and reading. From the James Patterson Pageturner Awards, to his website ReadKiddoRead.com, to his College Book Bucks scholarships and his regular donations of hundreds of thousands of books to schools here in the states and troops overseas (see interviews on Fox & Friends, The Dennis Miller Radio Show and CNN.com), Patterson has passed on his passion of books and reading and supported those who do the same. Jim personally funded a major ad campaign re-printing a recent opinion piece on CNN.com about how it is our responsibility to get our kids reading. The ad has run in the New York Times, The New Yorker, and USA Today. Those ads are a call to action to parents to make their kids reading a top priority; and were featured by USA Today here. Patterson believes that we cannot rely on schools, teachers or the government to get our kids reading; only parents can make this crucial change in the reading habits of our kids. Here are links to some interviews on his first-ever dual lay down (two books, one for parents and one for kids, in one day): AOL's You've Got, NBC's "Today Show" with Hoda and Kathie Lee, USA Today and Family Circle, NBC's "Today Show" with Al Roker, as well as an interview with AARP.
