Book Description

What do you do when you miss someone every day? If you live in the eloquently magical world of Simms Taback, you wrap yourself in paper, close yourself up in a box (don?t forget the air holes!) and mail yourself to the one you love. From the creator of the Caldecott Medal-winning Joseph Had a Little Overcoat comes this tale about what a little girl will do to reach the person she just can?t live without. Filled with Taback?s signature vibrant colors and dynamic characters, with a lyrical text that?s as silly as it is moving, this gesture of love will resonate with anyone who?s ever missed someone.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In rhyming lines, a young girl tells a faraway loved one about her loneliness, and also her solution: "I'm going to wrap myself just like a present . . . and send myself your way." Minimal words and whimsical, bright, textured illustrations follow the girl as she wraps herself in brown paper, jumps into a box (with holes for her sneakered feet), and walks to the post office, where she imagines being stamped, processed, and sent by plane and truck to the address of her loved one (who is never identified). Her final instructions: "Tuck me in and read a story and everything will be O.K." The book's title is also the text's refrain, and the words' repetition, along with each page's clear focus on the yearning girl, reinforce the story's potent sense of separation from a favorite person. The loved one's open-ended identity leaves lots of room for kids to imagine their own scenarios. Both upbeat and poignant, this partners well with Libby Gleeson's Half a World Away (2007). 5.0 out of 5 stars Great pick for moving or children of a deployment, August 17, 2009
This review is from: I Miss You Every Day (Hardcover)
My 3 1/2 year old son responded really well to this book after we got it from the library. His dad was temporarily working out of state and we read this book often. He talks about who he misses and tries to pretend a house in the book is either grandma, dad, or our house. This is a great read aloud and the text is short, sweet, and engaging -- which is a hard accomplishment for dealing with sad and lonely feelings of a young child missing someone. This is brilliant, it engages genuine emotions with a silly-fun idea to mail yourself to someone. We love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Miss You Everyday, March 10, 2008

This review is from: I Miss You Every Day (Hardcover)
This story was recommended by children's literature specialist Judy Freeman. I used this book for my second grade literacy groups. They wrote letters as with the little girl in the story to someone they miss everyday. The illustrations are bright and humorous as this little girl goes through the processes of mailing herself to her special someone. The story never tells who she is going to see and it was fun doing predictions with the second graders imagining where she might be going and who she was going to see. It led to many discussions and story sharing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Children's Book, January 23, 2012

This review is from: I Miss You Every Day (Hardcover)
Simms Taback recently passed away and his works are gems. This book (I miss you every day) is excellent as a teaching tool for children of ages 4 - 10 who may be suffering from the grief of loss from various causes (death, divorce, etc.) Since the author is no longer around, his existing works are to be greatly cherished.
