Not as good as his debut album, but worth your money
on December 29, 2004
I first became a Ruben fan after seeing AI2. He can definitely sing, as both of his albums prove. There's no change in that. He sings better than both Justin Timberlake & Usher, yet he's suffering sales wise. We all know why, but I won't get on that. I'll just review the album.
I know Gospel music very well, and this is a wonderful Gospel album by Ruben. The majority of the songs are covers of Gospel classics, but Ruben does very well with them. Some standouts are: "I Need An Angel" (my favorite; written & produced by R. Kelly), "Center of My Joy", "Restoration", "We Have Not Forgotten" (feat. Fred Hammond; also on Ruben's debut CD), "I Surrender All", and "Don't Give Up". Although those are some of my favorites, one that really caught my ear was Ruben's cover of "Ain't No Need To Worry". He covered it with Tina Campbell of Gospel superstars Mary Mary, but it's actually a Gospel classic. Originally recorded & released in 1987 by The Winans featuring Anita Baker, Ruben & Tina do a great job with the remake. Of course, no remake is ever as good as the original recording, but this version comes close to it.
