Flip the bird,
By
This review is from: I Need Mine (Audio CD)
Truth be told, I have never been much of a Lil' Flip fan other than "Game Over". But I still decided to give his latest album I Need Mine a try. This album was actually supposed to be released back in 2005 but his label shelved it, and it's easy to see why.
If you're planning on listening to this album, make sure you don't have much to do for the rest of the day because it's hard to sit through. And it's not because most of the things that Flip has to say are uninspired; it's also because now he added on another whole album's worth of material on here, thus resulting in the whole thing clocking in at almost 2-1/2 hours. In addition, there are two remixes of remixes on here ("Fly Boy" and "You'z a Trick"), and the only saving grace to either of them is UGK's appearance on the second "You'z a Trick". And Flip usually uses the same subject matter: either shooting people up or bragging about his success -- oh, and an obligatory song for the ladies (see the Mya-assisted "Flippin'", which features a sample probably best remembered from Heavy D and the Boyz' "Nuttin' But Love"). Speaking of that, though, guest stars are another issue. Nate Dogg and Lyfe Jennings do add nice hooks to the respective tracks "Take You There" and "Ghetto Mindstate", and Yukmouth sounds fine on "Stay Ballin'", as do Three Six Mafia on "3,2,1 Go". But most of the other guests fall flat, especially the boring hooks by some crooner called Big Shasta (see "The Souf" or "We Go Make It Out da Hood"). And as for "Sorry Lil' Mama", well, Z-Ro and Nutt definitely live up to their names. Flip isn't all that when he's by himself either, as evidenced by the boring "Warrior" or "I Just Wanna Tell U" (and the noodle brand is pronounced RAH-men, not RAY-men; why can't rappers pronounce that?). There are also a couple of formulaic songs that fail to impress, like the shake-that-ass vibe of "Make It Shake" and the song with a message, "Single Mother". And on "Hall of Fame Graveyard", he gives props to deceased rappers, but he also zings himself when he asks why all the good rappers are dead while the wack rappers are still alive. There are other bad songs on here, but I didn't feel like listening to 37 tracks worth of material again to pinpoint them. And when your album is that long and it isn't even good, well...I shouldn't have to explain anything else. Even though I only downloaded this Lil' Flip album, if you want it, you're welcome to it because I sure don't need mine. Anthony Rupert

2nd double disc album from Flip is a good one,
By
This review is from: I Need Mine (Audio CD)
After almost 3 years since his last studio album and almost a years worth of push backs, Flip finally releases his 4th major label solo album. Like his last one this si also a 2cd set, with 37 songs and almost 2 and a half hrs. of music, so yeah quantity is high, but I also think there is a good amount of good songs on this one. His last double disc was only 21 songs (and only about 14 or 15 were worth it), on this one I think he could have put out a 18-20 song CD worhty of 4.5 stars. Of the 37 songs, 1 classic, 2 are almost classics, 1 I skip, 16 are ok and the other 17 are good songs. Guests are on about half of the songs. Production is good and bad. Synphony does 13 songs, Shorty Pe & Flip do 6, Salaam Remi, Mel Beatz, Z-Ro and Three-6 Mafia all do 2 songs, Attractive Prod. does 4, Carnival beatz, DJ Squeeky, Frank Nitty, Scott Storch, Fyngaz, Manny Fresh, and Russell Rockwell all do 1 song. Though it doesn't match his "Undaground Legend" I think it's equal with "U Gotta Feel Me" and barely worth 4 stars but worth checking out.

One look at the cover of this album and I was saying to myself that this is going to be something new and creative because no one in hip hop tries the album cover holding up money and jewelry. This guy and D4L are the only two bold enough to pull that off and we know how innovative D4L was. I'm a rapper myself and I just can't get a following. I write raps about garage door openers, beans and mouthwash because I thought I would be different. No one wants to hear about that stuff. They want to hear what a genius like Lil Flip has to say. An aside, on my rankings of rappers with Lil in their name, I rank Flip number 15. He's no Lil Wayne, Lil Jon, Lil Scrappy or Lil Flushot, but that boy good.
What sets him apart is that he deviates from the norm. What other rappers have the sack to write deep tracks like: I get money, Playa 4 life, Hustle, Get it Crunk and Make it Shake. This cat is breaking new ground and I am inspired to write new stuff. I'm changing my name to Lil Bpimp and putting out an album called, "I got money, come here shawtys". It will go multiplatinum and I'll get a goblet covered in rubies. I'm so crizzunk.

it wasnt love at first listen!,

This review is from: I Need Mine (Audio CD)
As the title states it definitely was not love at first listen. But after a few more listens I began to tolerate it. Then I listened to it again a couple weeks later and realized that I had really slept on this album. This album has some really good beats, and some decent lyrics(as we all know Flip is not the best lyricist). The guest spots are great too. The bad thing about this album is that there are a lot of fillers. This cd could easily be trimmed down to a single cd. I personally love double albums, but this should not be one. If it were just the following songs: Ghetto Mindstate, Bustaclip, Playa 4 Life, White Cup, Find My Way, Single Mother, I just wanna tell you, Sorry lil mama, Take you there, We go make it out da hood, Cruise Control, Real Hip Hop, Stay Ballin, Get it crunk, Tell Me, 3,2,1 Go, Make it Shake, What it do, and the remixes of Fly Boy and Youz a Trick: then I would definitely rate it a 5 star, but due to all the filler tracks I have to give it a four. So all in all it is worth your time and money.

A FAN'S review for FANS,
By Stephen Y (Texas) - See all my reviews

This is a review for people that LIKE Lil' Flip and have come to know what a Lil' Flip CD is going to contain. Anyone out there thinking they are going to find some 2Pac/BIG/etc... style rhymes and lyrics, then you have not listened to Flip before. Just look at the cover of the CD; he`s holding a stack of money and a huge Clover chain, so it's safe to assume that it's going to be some "bling" rap.
I have an electronic "underground" copy of the original I Need Mine (through Sony I think), but I purchased this CD from Best Buy and it came with 2 bonus tracks (that were to be included as tracks on the initial I Need Mine release), so that's about $12 for right under 40 songs (or $15 here for 37). The only song on here that is missing from the original slated release is "The Gudda," or at least that's the only one I can't find. Most of the songs are the same, and a couple of the songs have varied intros, but they remain pretty much untouched. As a Lil' Flip album, I loved it. I think I am beginning to like it better than U Gotta Feel Me, but I still like Undaground Legend the best. I liked the original songs I had, and was hoping the new tracks would be just as good and I think for the majority they are. Some of my favorite tracks are: "Fly Boy" "Bustaclip" "Playa 4 Life" "Starched & Cleaned" "Get It Crunked" "What It Do" "You'z A Trick" "Warrior" And so on... Lyrically, it is typical Flip. Simple styled, slower rhymes, with a few faster ones here and there. To me, I think the lyrics on this album are better/more amusing than U Gotta Feel Me, but it's kind of a toss up. I still prefer the lyric style on Undaground Legend better, but I don't think his style now is bad at all. If you liked U Gotta Feel Me, then chances are you'll like this. I also love the beats. I know the argument is out there that slams the idea of liking a rap song for the beat over lyrics, but I don't support that. I think just like a rock song, sometimes the guitar/drum/etc parts make the song and are more memorable than the lyrics. I think most of the songs are great driving/working out/etc songs, and while not the most thought provoking, if you're a Flip fan, you know what you're getting when you buy the CD. Which leaves one last point... I don't get the negative reviews from people that are complaining that it's the same old simple rhymes/beats. If you're familiar with his work (as most of the negative reviews seem to be) or some of the other Houston rappers, what were you expecting? All Eyez On Me? Illmatic? The Chronic? I guess it's just a matter of taste, but I think his lyrics/beats fit his style just fine. Maybe that's just me... ...Bottom line: You like Flip? It's safe to say you'll enjoy "I Need Mine." You don't like Flip? This album probably won't make you a fan.

i need mine aspirin after listening to this crap.,

Its bad enough that this idiot lowlife clown considers himself a rapper. Its horrible that his dumb, retarded nursery rhymes which supposedly took 10 minutes to make (no surprise, they suck) are blown out of proportion by this idiot. Its just ridiculous that this moron considers himself up to par with Jay-Z and commonly associates himself with hip-hop.
Worst part of all, ITS ANOTHER DOUBLE DISC CD. of what, you say? CRAP. the same crap and horse manure you dealt with in You Gotta Feel Me. I didn't feel that album and i sure as heck don't and will not ever feel this crap. pros of the CD? production is good, and... well... that's about it. cons? everything that isn't production. erase the ridiculous ramble that this moron spews at you and you got yourself a great dance CD. Nothing that can be considered remotely lyrical will ever come out of this clown's mouth. Here's what i don't get. who told this nobody he's the freestyle king? what kind of contest did he actually enter to gain such a farfetched title? I mean, initially the first thought that came to mind was that he was battling against 1st graders, hence his lyrics are on about the same level, but then i figured even first graders probably school this nobody. Must be why DJ Screw died, he committed a sin and gave the idiot a title he's nowhere near worthy of. If he's an alleged freestyler, where's the proof? i mean, if he actually sat down and thought of the mother goose rhymes that showcase in this album and others before it, god only knows how much worse his freestyle is. The only chance he has in one is against mutes, and its a fair chance, not a sure one. This idiot really has no business being near a studio. This album is proof that no matter what he will ever say, he's retarded and serves no purpose in hip-hop and maybe even among humans. if you're leaning towards some promising act from the south, look elsewhere such as in T.I.'s discography. Something actually worthwhile. Undaground Legend was EXCEPTIONAL, but still wasn't good. let's just say, that's the only album you'd consider spinning twice. By the way, the reason this is a double-disc and priced the same as regular CD's is because he knows that no one will pay over 20 bucks for his ridiculous, pathetic excuse for music. Let's be honest, most of us don't even want this CD if it was free, much less torturing ourselves by giving it a second listen. To think i gave this album a chance. All he has is hype and even that will deteriorate, let's just hope its soon enough so we can move on. Its just hype, and he doesn't have anything else. He can commit suicide and the only acknowledgment he'd receive from me is a chuckle. dead serious.

Same ole, same ole,
This review is from: I Need Mine (Audio CD)
I haven't been able to get through one of his albums yet. I'm so burnt out on Dr. Seuss rhyming (using the very first word that rhymes and makes sense with the word before it and even worse repeating the same word when he can't find one to rhyme), but Lil' Flip was on "Beef" and he sounded so intelligent. He'd said in magazines that it was easy to use multisyllabics and rhyme deeper. So, I listened to this album on a music site to see if he'd done so. There were a couple of songs like "Single Mother" and "Find My Way." But overall, still the same weak rhymes, talking about weed, challenging gossipers (why do you care? Just ignore them), cars, and a billion references to how much money he makes. Pretty much all of this album sounds like an audio commercial for who is a good prospect to rob, especially that terribly offbeat song "Can't U Tell." I'm so confused though because he said we need more lyricists like Common and Kanye, so why not be one of those lyricists? He completely blew me when he said he was like Jay-Z, remembering rhymes or not, he's not even close. I'm glad dude is rhyming about putting money back into the community though.
