I performed in this play in Northeastern Iowa (of all places!) when I was just 8 years old, and have repeatedly told people over the course of my life how moving the play is, and how it affected me as a child. My mother was also in the play and was careful to explain to me how important the story was. In college I searched in vain for a copy of this play to perform a scene for an acting class. I guess my review is this - after 22 years this play is still with me.

About eight years ago in Junior High School our drama teacher had us preform this play. The poems these children wrote were so powerful you couldn't help but cry. I never forgot that play and what those children went through. This is an excellent play! It helped me understand the Holocaust better than any text book could.

This play is a wonderful thing. It really opened my eyes as to what happened to these poor children. Our audience was silent when we finished with opening night (last night) and I was crying. I have never experienced anything like it. I have never been so moved by words and actions. This play has changed me in a subtle way, and I thank my director for choosing it. To play someone who actually lived is a very moving experience, especially when you know what they went through in order to have a play written about them and many books too. I love this play, and will never forget the wonderful experience I've had.

I Never Saw Another Butterfly performance,

We've been rehersing this play for about a month and a half now and are performing it tomorrow! I love the story but I would recommend that if you are involved that you do some research of you didn't know much like me. Schindler's list is helpful. I play Honza, who is a positive aspect of the play but the part is still depressing. It really does depend on how you look at it. You either focus on the horrible things that happened, and how many people died, or the positives - that people actually survived to tell the story. It's quite hard for me as I'm playing Honza in 2(we're only doing 2) performances and there are 2 Raja's (or Rayas). Please if you are in this play just appreciate the seriousness of the issue before you start acting.

A Very Real Time In History!,
By A Customer
This review is from: I Never Saw Another Butterfly (One Act) (Paperback)
I was competing in a one-act play competition when I saw this play. We had just finished performing when we viewed it. Many of my friends had tears in their eyes by the time it was finished. And that was only the one-act version!! I loved this play! Words cannot express how I feel about this play. It shocks many people to see or read about this type of brutality. But, it really did happen. World War 2 was an actual time in history! Most people don't realize the extent of the genocide at this period in time.

"Butterfly" is hard on the emotions, an intense play about children in the Holocaust. The farther away we get from those events in the 1930's and 40's, the more we need to expose children and adults to literature like this, so that we never forget, and realize that what is happening to children today in so many third world countries is, unfortunately, not new or unique.

Incredible, always brings tears to my eyes,
This review is from: I Never Saw Another Butterfly (One Act) (Paperback)
I performed this play in this year (9th grade) at my high school. When i read it for auditions, i loved it, I did get teary eyed reading it. I auditioned and i got the part of Pavel (Raja's rebellious brother). We had a month of rehearsals, and the opening night came along. I soon realized the power of the show, it is increasingly effective, and i cired more than once when I was able to see the show. It is an amazing play that I love to read, and it will always brings tears my eyes. I have been in 4 shows (Grease, You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, Over the River and Through the Woods, and this) Butterfly is my favorite, hands down. Buy it, you'll love it

Loved, but puzzled,

I too love the play, I Never Saw Another Butterfly. I have directed it twice and have learned something new about the period each time. I am wondering now, after analyzing the piece, would the name be pronounced Raja with a 'j' sound or would it be pronounced as Raya? In order to put my analysis of the script in complete perspective I need to know.

I absolutely love this book. I competed in a one act play competition with this play. I was Raja Englanderova. For all the months that we rehearsed, I was her. I became so involved in studying the time period. This put a chill down my spine to realize what actually occurred to these people. This is so real. It is absolutely amazing!
