Romance, Passion, and Betrayal,
By Wendy Gallagher (Portland, Oregon) - See all my reviews
This review is from: I Promise (Arabesque) (Mass Market Paperback)
Have you ever wanted something that you could never have? This is how Malcom Williams feels about Christian McKinley in I Promise. Malcom is a rich young man who is known by all the ladies as a player, but the one woman he is ready to settle down with only wants to be his friend. When Christian accidentally kisses Malcom's twin brother, Jordan, sparks fly. Not only is their tension between the brothers, but Jordan is sure he is in love with Christian. He is sure that she is in love with him too, but their is something mysterious holding Christian back from him. The story shows what true love really is. "His strong arms provide a sense of security, strength, and love. The word swirled inside her head." My sister recommended I Promise to me as the best romance book she has ever read. I decided to read it and this is a great book that is a pleasure to read because it has such an interesting plot and is written to keep you wondering until the end. If you read this book you won't want to put it down until you've discovered Christian's secret and find out if Jordan can find a place in her heart.

Double Trouble!,
This review is from: I Promise (Arabesque) (Mass Market Paperback)
Recent graduate Christian McKinley is a simple girl who is leaving Atlanta to head back to Texas to help with her families' ranch. Malcolm Williams has always gotten what he wanted, but Christian only wanted to be his friend...so he proposed to her! Not wanting to embarrass him in front of his family, Christian accepts. Waiting to break things off with Malcolm, she sees him and starts to explain why she can't marry him. He accepts her reasons, but asks for one last kiss. During the kiss, Malcolm walks up and catches Christian kissing his twin brother Jordan. Christian knows there is something different about Jordan Williams. Jordan can't stop thinking about Christian. He does everything in his power to convince her that they should be together. Christian can't let that happen no matter how much she is in love with Jordan, because not even Jordan would want her if he knew.
I Promise has a love square vibe. The main characters are constantly developing and changing, making them a very vital part of the plot. The setting is also an essential part to the story. Where each event takes place is made more significant due to the settings. Byrd is an excellent writer that has a writing style that flows. When you put the elements of great characters, a classic plot, and a wonderful setting together, it makes for a very good book. Reviewed by Tenecia for Urban Reviews

Truly wonderful story.,

This review is from: I Promise (Arabesque) (Mass Market Paperback)
Good things were in store for Christian, a young woman who had faced several obstacles before in her life. Christian lost her parents in a car wreck, that also traumatized her because she was also in the accident. Now, Christian was facing cancer in her own life. However, there were many good things in her life. She had a wonderful, loving grandmother and an uncle, as well as other family members and friends, Malcolm Williams, for one. But to Malcolm, Christian was more than a friend. Malcolm thought he was in love with Christian and wanted to marry her. Needless to say, Christian's feelings did not run deep enough for her to love Malcolm in that way -- to promise to be his wife. Before she can explain things to him, Christian unknowingly meets Malcolm's twin brother, Jordan. After mistakenly giving what she thought was a friendly parting kiss to Malcolm, sparks fly for Jordan and he is helplessly drawn to Christian. Things develop between them and although the developments in their lives are not easy, love is there and prevails. "I Promise" is a book about love, trust, and commitment. It is about being there no matter what comes along. It is also about the educational awareness of breast cancer in women. It can not only strike the old or middle age, but the young are vulnerable also.

I enjoyed the story and the characters in this book. Jordon is honest and full of compassion for Chrissy's problem. He over looked her scar and saw a beautiful person. This is a very good book with issues concerning breast cancer.

I Have Seen It Before,

While the book was good as a person who has read several of Byrd's book I am seeing a pattern that I am beginning not to like. In all of the books I have read from her so far the female main character is always some damsel in distress that needs help an the man comes in like Superman and saves her at the end of the story. While I typically wont mind this especially if this is her preferred niche, I would like to see a change in plot at least once in a while. So for that I didn't really like this story because I knew exactly how it was going to play out.

Just OK.,

Byrd, I love your books, but you let me down on this one. "I Promise", has excellent characters & story line. I just wished, you did not save the last 50 pages for the best part of the book, then leave the readers wanting more. Don't get me wrong, it is excellent to see romance w/ someone w/ imperfections (thats life).
